New Flavour Services From RSSL
Reading Scientific Services Ltd (RSSL) has launched a new suite of flavour services in April, providing product development support to the food industriy.

RSSL will offer sophisticated flavour analysis, with the capability to identify and quantify key flavour compounds, match up analytical with sensory data and substantiate IP claims surrounding flavour.

The new offering from RSSL will provide manufacturers with profiling of the volatile compounds in their product, identification of the key aroma compounds within that profile, and insight into flavour release over time. Thoroughly understanding these aspects of a product’s flavour is the key to improving and optimising its formulation. By identifying the components that characterise a distinctive flavour, RSSL will assist manufacturers to select ingredients and processes so as to produce the desired outcome in a cost-effective and efficient manner. Understanding what components are producing a flavour is also a safeguard in case a change of formulation is required - alternative ingredients producing a similar effect can more easily be identified. It is also crucial to understand flavour change over time, both for optimisation and claims substantiation.

RSSL is looking forward to partnering with manufacturers in the key product development processes of understanding and optimising flavour.

New Lipids Profiling Service
Food manufacturers can explore a fresh avenue to competitive advantage with the launch of a new lipids profiling service.

Reading Scientific Services Ltd (RSSL) will now analyse fats and oils - both raw materials and in finished products – to produce characteristic triglyceride profiles and provide manufacturers with crucial information.

Using GC, GC-MS, LC and LC-MS techniques, RSSL’s Lipids Laboratory will build up a detailed profile of the fat or oil’s triglyceride (TAG) components: what fatty acids are present, in what quantities, and their relative positions on the glycerol backbone (regioisomerism). This data is a powerful tool for product development, troubleshooting, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and claims substantiation.

Perhaps the biggest impact of TAG data for manufacturers is that once the triglyceride content is characterised, it can be optimised. Profiling provides a deeper understanding of how different components affect behaviour, so blends can be made better, more stable and more cost-effective to produce. Use of the data need not be restricted to product development, however, and manufacturers may find that lipid profiling also provides a useful route to demonstrating IP claims, product authenticity or compliance with regulations – ensuring the absence of inter esterified fats when required, for instance.

The investigation of product issues also sees a boost from this new capability, as detailed comparison between good and problem samples will reveal issues such as non-optimal TAG composition or rearrangement to a different regioisomer.

New Inline Fat Analysis System To Be Launched At Interpack
To address the quality needs of food manufacturers wishing to enhance their product inspection capabilities for complex container packages and also the meat industry’s demand for efficient multi-functional inline fat analysis systems, Eagle Product Inspection (Eagle) has designed new innovations to be showcased at interpack 2014, Dusseldorf, Germany (May 8-14, 2014) in Hall 13, Stand D12.

A new high-tech inline fat analysis system for meat products will be officially launched at this year’s interpack. This new fat analysis technology combines fat and weight inspection, contaminant detection and measurement of protein and moisture values. In addition, showcased for the first time, will be Eagle™ Tall PRO XSDV, a dual view x-ray system designed to detect and remove up to 50% smaller sized contaminants located in rigid and glass containers.

Eagle’s Quality Assured technologies at interpack 2014:
• New Eagle Fat Analysis Technology ◦ ​This system is specifically designed for high performance contaminant inspection and in-line fat analysis of meat products. The new product inspection technology features third generation superior sanitary design ideal for harsh wash down environments and incorporates the latest advancements in SimulTask™ software, to allow for enhanced chemical lean measurement over varying thicknesses of meat.

• Eagle™ Tall PRO XSDV ◦ ​Designed with a single generator producing two x-ray beams, this x-ray system offers higher detection sensitivity levels than traditional x-ray systems for contaminants located in rigid and glass containers. The technology is sophisticated to inspect different sides of packages for foreign bodies for example, cans and bottles, plus examines fill-levels. The slimline x-ray machine also provides simultaneous integrity checks on high speed lines and is ideal for manufacturing facilities with limited space.

Also on display at interpack 2014, is the Eagle™ Pack 550 PRO x-ray inspection system ideal for contaminant detection and quality measurements for large and varied sized packages. Featuring Eagle™ Material Discrimination Technology (MDX), the advanced dual energy technology allows manufacturers to detect and remove contaminants, for example, glass shards, plastics, rubber, calcified bone and stones, in products with complex density levels such as pre-packed salads, snack items or frozen vegetables. This x-ray inspection system is targeted for large bags, pouches, cartons, thermoform trays and multipack container packaging.
