Accelerated Stability Testing Service Launched
A new accelerated stability testing service for oils, fats and finished products will provide invaluable support to the food industry, says Reading Scientific Services Ltd.

Accelerated testing allows oxidative stability to be evaluated in a fraction of the standard time, so more stable products with longer shelf-life can be developed quicker.

The RSSL Lipids Team uses Rancimat and Oxipres equipment to study the oxidation of oils, fats and lipids in raw materials and finished products that leads to rancidity and off flavours in food over time. Conditions within the instruments are set to accelerate the oxidation process, therefore allowing evaluation of stability in a shorter timeframe. This can provide guidance to performance throughout shelf-life, as results can be interpreted to predict real-life behaviour.

The accelerated oxidative stability testing service will assist in product development by allowing a range of formulations to be quickly tested and narrowed down to the most promising, which can then be taken through real-time shelf-life testing using the bench chemistry techniques commonly used to assess oxidation. The accelerated testing can also be used to rapidly assess the impact of different processing conditions and product format on product stability.
A significantly shorter timeframe for developing products with the desired shelf-life provides numerous benefits to manufacturers: the route to market for new products is shortened, costs reduced and quality maintained.

METTLER TOLEDO And Konica Minolta Partner For Automatic Quality Monitoring Solution
: METTLER TOLEDO and Konica Minolta Sensing, Two world-wide renowned specialists in their field have joined forces and announced a strategic partnership in the field of Multi-parameter Analysis for the Flavours & Fragrances industry.

The partnership will bundle the CM-5 or CR-5 Spectrophotometer from Konica Minolta with the Density, Refractive index and pH instruments from METTLER TOLEDO to provide a complete system for automatic quality monitoring of raw materials and finished goods.

METTLER TOLEDO, a leader in instrumentation for analytical chemistry and Konica Minolta Sensing Europe, a leader in colour measuring solutions, have decided to join forces with a strategic partnership by adding colour measurement solutions to density, refractive index and pH measurement to offer a dedicated automatic multi-parameter analysis system for the Food and Flavours & Fragrances industry.

This is in response to todays trends towards workflow automation, driven by the need to increase throughput and improve safety and data quality for multi parametric evaluations. During quality monitoring of raw materials, intermediate and finished products in foods, as well as flavours and fragrances, it is essential that the specific gravity, refractive index and pH value are accurately determined. In addition, the need to precisely monitor and control the colour of samples has become increasingly important.

In contrast to heavy solutions, the benefits of the newly offered system are modularity and flexibility. The modular design of METTLER TOLEDO LiquiPhysics allows bundling different measurement instruments: Density Meters, Refractometers, pH- or Conductivity-Meters can be freely combined for a simultaneous determination of the needed parameters. Measurements of all instruments can be started with a single click on the user-friendly touch screen display. Sampling, cleaning and drying of the whole system is done completely automatically with the powerful automation units.

The CM-5 and the basic model CR-5 are compact and flexible spectrophotometers from Konica Minolta Sensing. These instruments are now integrated in the METTLER TOLEDO LiquiPhysics system.

Equipped with a flow-trough cell, colour measurement of liquids can be performed automatically and in parallel with the determination of density / specific gravity, refractive index, pH or conductivity. All instrument functions and data handling of the spectrophotometers are then controlled by a METTLER TOLEDO instrument or by the LabX Software. The optional LabX Software manages not only data but also the product database, users and instruments. LabX Software is ready for integration with LIMS / ERP and ELN.

Non Destructive Oxygen Analyser Launched By RDM
RDM Test Equipment is launching for the UK market the new MOCON OpTech-O platinum, a new standard-setting oxygen (O) analyser using optical fluorescence technology.

The systems use of platinum fluorescent material, coupled with state-of-the-art electronics provides significant advantages over other O technologies.

The platinum chemistry used in the OpTech-O platinum will fluoresce or give off light in an amount which is directly related to the amount of oxygen present. This fluorescence can be then read optically making it ideal for non-destructive permeation analysis, headspace and dissolved oxygen analysis as well as leak determination in flexible and rigid packaging.

A small platinum-based spot encased in a substrate is inserted into a package, either in the package headspace or in liquid in the case of a liquid based product. Change in Oxygen due to permeation is then read externally over time through a sealed package using a handheld reader.

The OpTech-O is able to measure oxygen down to 10 parts per million (ppm) and a measuring range of 0.001 to 30% O. Functionally, the platinum material is very stable over long periods of time, is less sensitive to ambient light and is less temperature sensitive than other chemistries, increasing the accuracy of reading.

The OpTech-O platinum is an ideal multi-purpose O analyser for a variety of food products.
