SuperFast Thermapen® 4 Thermometer
The SuperFast Thermapen is the UK’s number one selling food thermometer measuring temperature over the range of -49.9 to 299.9 °C. Used by hundreds of thousands of people worldwide, it offers a combination of speed, accuracy and convenience of use. Electronic Temperature Instruments Ltd, the UK manufacturers of the Thermapen thermometer have now made it even better ….

Advanced technology makes the new Thermapen 4 even more intuitive than previous models. The patented 360° self-rotating display automatically turns so the user can read the thermometer in any position — in either hand, left or right.

The Thermapen 4 knows when it’s dark and turns on the backlight for you, making it easy to read in poorly lit areas or complete darkness. Alternatively, just touch the sensor window with your finger and the display lights up. The Thermapen 4 is powered by a single AAA battery with a life expectancy of 3000 hours in normal use. Both low battery and open circuit (broken probe) are displayed, when applicable.

The motion-sensing sleep mode automatically turns the Thermapen 4 on or off when the user picks it up or puts it down, maximising battery life. The thermometer will stay on all the time you are using it, but when put down, it will switch to sleep mode to save battery life. Close the probe when you’re finished and the Thermapen 4 turns off for storage. High-tech, intuitive, fast and accurate.

The plastic casing is washable and includes 'Biomaster' additive that reduces bacterial growth. The ergonomic rubber seal minimises the risk of the ingress of water, dust or food. As well as being waterproof to IP66/67, it is still 'probably' the fastest reading contact thermometer on the market today. The true temperature of a product can be tested in just three seconds. The Thermapen 4 incorporates a reduced tip, stainless steel, penetration probe (Ø3.3 x 110 mm) that conveniently folds back through 180° into the side of the instrument when not in use.

Each Thermapen 4 is supplied with a traceable certificate of calibration.

Genetic ID Launches New PCR Test For Oregano Authenticity
Genetic ID (Europe) has launched a rapid and cost effective detection method of myrtle and olive leaves in dried oregano.

Genetic ID is applying a Real Time PCR based semi-quantitative method. The service is available with a turnaround time of the following day, if required.

The new method has been developed in-house by Genetic ID, a leading European food authenticity test lab, in order to assist food manufacturers with verifying the authenticity of dried oregano. Authenticity of the dried herb sold through a number of retailers was recently called into question following publication of a study conducted by Professor Chris Elliott which revealed that 25% of 78 samples of dried oregano purchased in the UK and Ireland contained ingredients other than oregano.

Most commonly, olive and myrtle leaves were found in the samples. According to the study, some samples contained 30-70% of foreign botanic material, most commonly olive and myrtle leaves.

In order to filter out samples that contain only adventitious traces from those with substantial amounts of foreign botanical materials, Genetic ID is applying a reporting LOD of 1%. As this assay is PCR-based, customers can easily combine it with GMO or other species tests to keep testing costs down.

Bill Thompson, Managing Director of Genetic ID Europe said: “Consumers do need to know that the product they are purchasing is what it says on the label. The only way that spice importers as well as manufacturers and retailers can be assured of the validity of the dried oregano, is by robust and reliable testing. Using its extensive experience in food authenticity testing, Genetic ID has introduced this new method, which can be combined with GMO or speciation testing to keep costs down and we believe it is one of the first to market.”

Genetic ID is offering a range of TATs from standard three business days upon sample arrival through to an express service with results available by noon of the following business day.

New e-Learning Course Promotes Moisture Analysis Accuracy

METTLER TOLEDO is pleased to announce the availability of a new online course called “What Everybody Ought to Know about Moisture Analysis.” The e-learning course presents actions to improve moisture content analysis accuracy. Offered free for a limited time, the course also allows participants to earn a certificate that can be printed for internal tracking. This type of backup can be particularly helpful when working to obtain Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) qualification.

The course covers important topics such as common analysis methods, moisture analyzer installation and cleaning, optimum sample handling, and how to develop a consistent and reliable moisture analysis method. Strategies discussed include choosing the best location for analyzer installation, how external lab influences can affect results, and how to design methods that provide accurate results even in tricky environments such as fume hoods.

Premium moisture analyzers such as METTLER TOLEDO’s professional series will also be explored. These robust products offer benefits such as real-time drying curves which can be helpful when fine-tuning methods. Additionally, these next-generation analyzers make analysis easy: just choose a pre-programmed drying method, add sample, and press start. Results are shown clearly on the screen in real-time, with green indicating they meet predefined tolerances.

In essence, the course has been designed to help users enhance yields and reduce waste while learning how moisture analyzers can help promote success.
