Sales Spice up for EHL Ingredients Ahead of National Curry Week
With National Curry Week (13 – 19 October) upon us EHL Ingredients, a leading importer, blender and packer of natural food ingredients, has reported an increase in sales of hot and spicy chillies for curry dishes as well as its allergen-free curry powder.

The company has witnessed an 40% surge in enquiries for bhut jolokia (ghost chilli), scotch bonnet and habanero chillies, all particularly spicy varieties that can be used in curry dishes from South America, the Middle East, India and the Caribbean.

EHL has also seen a 35% increase in demand for its allergen-free curry powder blend, due to a rise in the number of food allergy sufferers in the UK. The blend does not contain mustard – the fourth most common food allergen in the UK – or celery, which can also cause allergic reactions.

EHL attributes this rise to a growing demand from food manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers looking to stock spicy ingredients in line with developing consumer tastes for hotter curries and spicy foods, as well as an increase in awareness of the health benefits of chillies.

Global industry reports suggest that consumer tastes around the world are changing to prefer spicy foods, as almost 70% of people worldwide would list ‘spicy’ as one of their top tastes out of a list including ‘salty’, ‘sweet’ and ‘bitter’. In addition, 32% of British consumers who eat ethnic food now say they enjoy spicier foods more than they have done in previous years.

Spicy food ingredients have received positive media coverage highlighting the health benefits of capsaicin, a compound found in chilli peppers that gives them their heat. This compound has been proven to reduce the risk of bowel cancer, the third most common type of cancer in the UK.

Cranswick Look Forward To Christmas As Pork Sales Drop In H1
Reporting its first half results, Cranswick, said that growth in its product categories had offset lower sales of fresh pork.

Revenue in the six months ended 30 September 2014 was in line with the same period last year.

Growth across most product categories offset lower sales of fresh pork and, as planned, a greater proportion of the Group's own pigs were utilised internally.

The markets in which the Group operates continue to be competitive. Operating margins in the first half are expected to be similar to those achieved in the previous financial year as a whole reflecting the Group's continued focus on operating efficiencies, product quality and innovation. Pig prices eased during the second quarter of the financial year and are now below the record highs seen at this time last year.

During the period, the Group has invested further in its asset base to increase capacity and improve efficiency. Work to extend the Delico cooked meats facility in Milton Keynes was completed on time and to budget. The project provides more capacity to meet anticipated sales growth and the investment in advanced cooking and slicing technology will deliver increased throughput and enhanced yields. A major upgrade to the chilling system at the Norfolk primary processing facility, which is nearing completion, will deliver similar benefits.

Cranswick continues to work closely with its customers and maintain its focus on service, quality and innovation to deliver exciting, competitively priced products. This approach, allied to a growing export trade, a broadening product portfolio and an increasing demand for premium British pork products by the UK consumer, leaves the business well-placed to deliver further growth.

With experienced management at all levels of the Group, a strong range of products, a well-invested asset base and a robust financial position, the Board remains confident in the continued long term success and development of the business.
