Event: EPLAN brings Industry 4.0 to the UK
EPLAN, the global market leader in electrical CAE software, will be introducing Industry 4.0 – the fourth industrial revolution – at an important event to be held on Wednesday, 28th January at the National Space Centre in Leicester.

The event will examine in detail the Industry 4.0 concept, explaining how it will help those who adopt it to develop intelligent manufacturing operations that are flexible, efficient, cost-effective and future proof.

EPLAN’s Industry 4.0 event will include demonstrations of integration technologies, highlighting in particular how technologies that are available right now can significantly improve integration along the value chain. The event will also explore how some of Europe’s most successful companies are already preparing for Industry 4.0.

Visitors can also participate in workshops, attend seminars and inspect exhibits from other industry leaders including Siemens, B&R, Igus, Kiesling, Omron, Phoenix Contact, Schneider Electric and Weidmuller. The workshops will cover a wide range of topics including robotics, cloud technology, software interfaces, machine safety and UK engineering predictions.

As visitors to EPLAN’s event will learn, the key goal of Industry 4.0 is to create intelligent (smart) factories with a focus on cyber physical systems primarily consisting of communication technologies, software, senses and processes – all of which have the potential, through cloud technology, to communicate and interact with each other in an intelligent way.

Ken Christie, Director of EPLAN said, “Despite the perceived complexity of Industry 4.0, what companies sometimes fail to realise is that many of the key technologies are available today. As a result, many companies are only using a fraction of the potential of the technologies they already have in place, which means that they are needlessly sacrificing revenues and productivity enhancements.”

“If UK companies are to compete successfully in the global marketplace, it is essential that they take full advantage of Industry 4.0 has to offer. Germany’s National Academy of Science and Engineering has stated that Industry 4.0 could lead to a 30% increase in industrial activity, which is hugely significant in today’s post-recession economy”.

Jelly Belly Achieves Sweet Coding Success With Videojet
Leading global candy manufacturer, Jelly Belly Candy Company has implemented Videojet Technologies’ CLARiSUITETM software to streamline coding, marking and labeling message management to successfully maintain production demands of 1,680 beans per second.

With more than 50 flavours of Jelly Belly© jelly beans, and over 100 gourmet candies, the company has integrated CLARiSUITETM to its existing Videojet Thermal Transfer Overprinters (TTO), Large Character Marking (LCM) systems and Continuous Ink Jet (CIJ) printers to ease the process of coding variable data on both primary and outer casing packaging, reduce lead times and inventory costs.

Implemented across its facilities in the United States and Thailand, CLARiSUITETM software helps to mitigate coding inaccuracies by significantly reducing the chance of human error in the message setup process.

Jelly Belly plant engineer Jim Schneider commented: “It is critical that we are able to network the printers. We use software from Videojet to maintain a central library and database of all our messages. All our plants access this single source of information via Videojet CLARiNET® network software at each plant – with the number of product items and ingredient lists we have, it is important that any updates to packaging information are uniform across all facilities.”

In order to reduce lead times, Jelly Belly implemented new technologies to ensure that varying batches of large and small candy packaging are accurately coded, while continuing to print all the required information at high production speeds, as well as incorporating additional customer requests, such as unique promotional material and personalized content. Jelly Belly’s installation of CLARiSUITETM software to manage 18 Videojet DataFlex® TTOs – each with clutch-less ribbon technology which automatically ensures efficient use of printer ribbon and reliable operation – provides Jelly Belly with the flexibility it needs to create images and messages for coding on both the front and back of packs.

In addition, the system allows Jelly Belly to reduce inventory costs by purchasing plain corrugated boxes and film to package its product, instead of sorting a wide variety of pre-printed materials.

A product or appropriate code is selected on the CLARiSUITETM software where information such as date place of manufacture, best-before date, lot, batch number and a wide range of both production and consumer information is accurately applied to every product. Throughout the packaging line, scanners check codes for accuracy, and if a coding issue is detected the alarm beacon can be activated and the line stopped, or the product rejected automatically. Each product package requires unique information specific to that particular product, such as expiration date, ingredient list, nutritional information and product weight, and with CLARiSUITETM software, operation managers can streamline processes to drive productivity, and at the same time, minimize risk, rework and recalls.

The central database for the CLARiSUITETM software helps to ensure coding accuracy; line operators need only to scan a bar code on a ticket with their project information and the DataFlex printer automatically accesses the database for code information. This eliminates the need for operators to manually set up coding, reducing mistakes and inconsistencies from one production line to another.

“In today’s global-orientated market, there is amplified reliance on manufacturers to run several production lines simultaneously with numerous products per line and codes to manage.” said Ondrej Kruk, Business Unit Manager, Videojet Technologies. “Videojet’s CLARiSUITE™ software offers functionality to help drive sustainable improvements in Overall Equipment Effectiveness, by helping manufacturers remove inefficiencies and the risk of operator error including data entry and job selection. By taking message creation and management off the production floor, CLARiSUITE TM helps ensure that consistent, accurate messages are applied to Jelly Bean’s products and packaging.”

QADEX Emphasises Importance of Food Safety As 33,317 Sign Petition to Stop Food Fraud
An alarming new spate of statistics has urged 33,317 Britons to sign a petition designed to prevent food fraud. Food fraud has been in the public consciousness since the most prevalent recorded case in present history, the European horse meat scandal of 2013 which affected 13 countries and 28 businesses.

With a recent analysis from the Food Safety Authority of Ireland revealing that household dinnertime staples such as pizza are made from a mammoth 35 ingredients that pass across 5 continents and 60 countries before they arrive in the UK, people are understandably concerned. The trend towards public anxiety about what’s in their food requires that businesses in the food manufacturing and processing industry take extra precautions to ensure that their produce can be accounted for.

Other disturbing statistics reveal similar cases of fraud with experts claiming that 40% of lamb takeaways contain alternate meats. Experts further predict that anywhere between 5-7% of American food produce is adversely affected by food fraud whilst a further 10% is unadulterated and cannot be accounted for. The experts at QADEX, food safety software developers, are well aware of the climate of deception and suspicion surrounding the global food market and urge businesses and companies to understand the ramifications to their business and brand.

Tracey Cranney, Operations Manager at QADEX said, “The problem nowadays is that the food industry is a huge global marketplace. The complexity of our food production means that food fraud has become a prevalent issue whether it be horse meat marketed as beef or a less expensive style of fish substituted at a restaurant. Because of the sprawling nature of the beast, it can be hard to monitor and difficult to know who to hold accountable.

“QADEX has been purposely created to drive down the risks for those who operate within the food industry. We want to protect customers and companies from those who would cut corners. Food needs to be what it says it is and businesses and customers need to know that they can trust their food. We need to learn from past scandals and take into account every part of the food chain to ensure that food is fresh, high quality and genuinely what it says it is.”

As the global marketplace continues to waver amidst food authenticity controversies, QADEX software enables businesses within the food industry the ability to focus on all areas of food safety ensuring that their business, brand and customers are protected. The myriad of tools available ensure that companies can audit every level of the food chain from suppliers, retailers, wholesalers, manufacturers, processers and food service operators to ensure transparency, accountability and authenticity. Businesses are also able to ensure that they take into consideration allergen risks, minimise complaints and ensure that high standards and compliance are adhered to.

Mrs Cranney adds, “The pre-meditated intention to substitute one ingredient for another, add in unlisted additions as fillers, or otherwise tampering with, concealing or misrepresenting the ingredients or packaging of a food product are dangerous to the industry. These actions damage big business and they also alienate customers. We are here to ensure that companies can operate safely and responsibly.”
