ICE Showcases Its Technology Trio At PPMA
The ground-breaking Vulcan print and apply labeller from Interactive Coding Equipment (ICE) will be one of the highlights of the company’s stand at this year’s PPMA Show alongside the proven technologies of its Zodiac thermal transfer and Viper thermal inkjet models.

Launched earlier this year, the Vulcan represents a significant advance in print and apply labelling, being the first of its type to print and directly apply the label to a pack – both traded unit boxes and shrinkwrap packs - in one continuous action without the need for a tamp applicator or compressed air.

As a result, the machine can print at the speed of the line without ever missing a pack, even when they are very closely spaced, achieving speeds that are up to three times faster than traditional machines.

The Vulcan’s Intelligent Motion™ drive system has eliminated the friction drive operation found in other printer applicator technology. This ensures faster and more accurate labelling with no creasing or label dropping and no chance for labels to become trapped in the system

The ICE Zodiac thermal transfer printer has been proven in more than 7,000 installations throughout the UK. Its unique sold state ribbon drive and the absence of any wearing parts such as clutch and brakes mean the printer combines excellent reliability with the lowest cost of ownership. In addition, it offers the flexibility to operate in both intermittent and continuous modes and at very low or very high speeds. Its robust construction can also be specified to IP65 standards for easy wash down.

The ICE Viper thermal inkjet printer can print up to four lines of text at 600dpi resolution as well as bar codes, 2D data matrix codes and logos. It offer easy set up and maintenance-free operation thanks to its simple-to-replace ink jet cartridge system.

ICE will be exhibiting in a shared stand alongside Videojet and Sunala.

Vision Software Designed to Help With New EU Regulations
New labelling laws as part of the EU Food Information for Consumers Regulation come into effect in December 2014, and QADEX are urging all businesses to plan ahead for the changes.

QADEX Vision software is designed to help food manufacturers be fully compliant in finished product specification, including all labelling regulations, which could help businesses avoid a hefty punishment.

The new food labelling regulation is part of the Food Information for Consumers Regulation (EU) No. 1169/2011, and states that allergen labelling rules are due to change on 13 December 2014. The regulation builds on current allergen labelling rules for pre-packed food, and introduces an additional requirement for foods sold non-packed or pre-packed for direct sale. The legislation has forced businesses to redesign many of their labels and make necessary changes to information provided in order to meet the standards.

Tracey Cranney, Operations Manager at QADEX said: “This is one of the biggest changes to labelling law we have seen in recent years, and the regulation is almost upon us. Food manufacturers and suppliers have very little time before the legislation comes into effect in December, so it’s imperative to plan ahead.

“Allergen management is a very important issue, and it is vital consumers receive the necessary advice and comprehensive ingredients list. QADEX software can help businesses manage allergen declarations and risk assessments, and stay on top of confusing labelling rules. We recommend all food businesses take action now before the EU regulation is implemented, to avoid any punishments for incompliance.”

The QADEX software system is a flexible program, designed for use in all stages of the food chain from manufacture to supermarket shelves. It features an abundance of modules to choose from, specific to each part of the product journey and tailored for manufacturers and suppliers, retailers and wholesalers and food service operators. To assist in correct allergen labelling, food manufacturers and processors need look no further than the Allergen Management and Labelling Module. The comprehensive tool actively decreases allergen related product recalls by auto-validating suppliers and performing routine risk assessments. This module can be used in conjunction with a range of other modules, such as the Raw Material Specifications Module, which include the allergen management module for free.

With so many food laws and regulations to stay on top of, it is essential that food businesses implement a fast, simple and effective way to manage compliance.

Tracey added, “Businesses need to ask themselves, can they afford a fine for incompliance and risk their company reputation? QADEX offers an easy and efficient solution to protect your customers from allergen recalls and your business from penalties and negative publicity.”

Videojet CLARiTY™ Laser Controller Helps Manufacturers Achieve Sustainable Improvements
As manufacturers face an increasingly competitive environment, leading operations have embraced lean manufacturing principles to drive uptime and improve yield.

To help manufacturers achieve sustainable improvements in Availability and Quality, Videojet Technologies, a global leader in coding marking and printing solutions, has launched its new CLARiTY™ Laser Controller to enhance the capability of its entire range of CO2 and fiber laser marking systems.

The new laser user interface places a powerful tool in the hands of production staff that significantly reduces line set-up and changeover time, aids operators in troubleshooting problems, and helps ensure the right code is placed on the right product time after time.

“Our new CLARiTY™ Laser Controller offers specific functionality to help drive sustainable improvements in Overall Equipment Effectiveness,” said Markus Vetter, Laser Business Unit Manager at Videojet Technologies.

“The line set-up wizard and our suite of productivity tools help operators address the sources of both planned and unplanned downtime. With the onboard suite of Code Assurance features, production supervisors and quality teams can easily create error-proofing rules during job set-up that limit operator input to predefined choices.”

The new CLARiTY™ Laser Controller offers an innovative line set-up wizard to aid maintenance and production staff during both initial line set-up and during product changeovers. The interface provides a visual representation of the laser on the packaging line, eliminating trial and error by configuring the print job to match the required production set-up. “Flexible production lines, by definition, experience more planned downtime than dedicated lines. The ability to compress changeover times releases valuable time to use for production,” explained Vetter.

“Depending on user familiarity, the new line set-up wizard can be between 25-50% faster than our legacy controller interface. Assuming even a modest number of changeovers per day, these time savings add up to meaningful production hours over the year.”

In addition to minimizing planned downtime, the CLARiTY™ Laser Controller offers tools to address the root causes of unplanned downtime. The on-board diagnostics tool presents instant fault information in a logical way with a drill-down option to enable the identification of the most frequent causes of printer faults.

Vetter comments: “The value of the diagnostics tool is the combination of the Printer and Operational Availability metrics along with the underlying pareto of faults. The data is presented in a logical way, helping operations staff confidently identify the root cause of downtime and fix it to achieve sustainable process improvement.”

To address manufacturers’ needs to eliminate sources of poor quality, the CLARiTY™ Laser Controller offers on-board Code Assurance.

“More than half of coding errors are caused by operator error and the most common mistakes include incorrect data entry and job selection. At a minimum, these mistakes can result in excessive scrap or rework, or worse, could result in potential fines or damage to the brand itself,” commented Vetter.

Predefined coding rules can be easily established during set-up that limit the operator’s choices to an allowable range, helping eliminate errors and the resulting impact to quality.

With the addition of the CLARiTY™ Laser Controller, Videojet now offers a common controller interface for all of its main primary and secondary packaging printers.

Vetter added: “A common user interface is a great benefit to operations using more than one printing technology. Operator training can be drastically reduced when common operations like job selection, data entry, and checking printer status can now be learned from a single interface design. Videojet is excited to bring innovation to laser coding, and the CLARiTY™ Laser Controller combines an intuitive user interface and powerful functionality to drive tangible improvements in customer operations.”
