ICE Launches Revolutionary Print And Apply Labeller
Coding specialist Interactive Coding Equipment (ICE) is launching a major breakthrough and significant advance in print and apply labelling technology, offering print speeds up to three times faster than traditional machines.

The new ICE Vulcan print and apply labeller is the first of its type to print and directly apply the label to a pack – both traded unit boxes and shrinkwrap packs - in one continuous action without the need for a tamp applicator or compressed air. This means the machine can print at the speed of the line, even when packs are very closely spaced, without ever missing a pack.

Key to the success of the Vulcan is its Intelligent Motion™ drive system, which has eliminated the friction drive operation found in other printer applicator technology. This delivers faster and more accurate labelling with no creasing or label dropping and no chance for labels to become trapped in the system. There are also fewer moving parts, which makes the system more reliable.

The Vulcan incorporates a ‘solid state’ printhead mechanism – a unique feature for thermal label printers – which allows the force on the printhead to be controlled electronically with great accuracy, for enhanced performance and print quality and extended head life. The print head can also be removed and replaced in less than a minute for fast changeovers.

Another feature unique to print and apply labellers is the Vulcan’s solid state ribbon drive which combines high performance and reliability with zero maintenance.

Like all ICE equipment, the Vulcan uses the company’s Clarity intelligent and intuitive interface, which offers ease of set-up and operation and simple integration into factory systems.

The machine’s compact dimensions mean it can fit easily into existing packing lines. It can be positioned to print on any side of a pack and also produce wraparound labels on two sides. Label sizes up to 110mm x 250mm can be accommodated and the machine can print all types of codes, including 2D bar codes, as well as intricate graphics.

“We believe the arrival of the Vulcan has introduced a new era for printer applicator technology, one where labelling is no longer the slowest part of the packing line,” comments ICE director Chris Simpson.

“The benefits of this machine can be seen not just in day-to-day operations but, equally important, on the bottom line, with a fast payback on investment.”

A Perfect Vision
of Food Production
“Our customers didn’t ask for vision systems,” says Martin Taube, Global Product Manager of Inspection Systems at Bizerba, “but they are under more pressure than ever to produce perfect products as a result of tighter regulations and higher standards. Adding vision was the way to give them what they needed.”

With 144 years of history in the food production business and customers around the world, the company has seen the rise of many technological innovations and process improvements.

The goal here was to put an end to costly product claims from customers. Bizerba uses line scan cameras in its Bizerba Vision System (BVS) to inspect production line food products, like packaged meats — the kind you see in the supermarket. The system inspects the bar code on the label, the text, and even the product itself.

When integrated into labelling lines, the BVS will automatically inspect the label position and the text printed on it as well as the colour of the foil. Packaging sizes and bar codes can also be verified using the system.

“Having the right label applied to the intended package is not something we leave to chance,” says James Farmer, head of Product Development at Bizerba North America. With a background in both mechanical and electrical engineering, he isn’t blind to his customers needs.

The inspection system keeps a sharp eye out for imperfections in packaging and labelling—performing crucial checks that prevent recalls and product claims. Any packaging that fails a producer’s standards is identified quickly and segregated from production.

“One of my favourites so far, has been an application at a Swiss cheese factory. You have all different sizes and shapes, from one millimeter to 90, and you have to deal with all of it.”

For Bizerba, customer service stays high on the priority list. To continue to deliver that meaningful product experience, and make it better and longer lasting, the company is constantly pushing forward.

Keeping things easy and convenient for their customers is part of that list, and is reflected in the systems they develop.

“We’ve created a standard tool set that was tailored to our industry.”

Before, Bizerba didn’t have this standard toolset, and their product was application based.

“Today, our customers can buy a standard piece of equipment, bolt it up, train it, and go.”

“That’s another thing that really sets us apart,” says Taube, “our commitment to a good user interface.” This approach ensures that training requirements for new machinery—or new employees—is as short as possible. It also makes the technology Bizerba packs into their systems more accessible. The user interface makes it easier to take advantage of innovations in machine vision.

Machine vision still has a long runway for food production and inspection. It’s a critical industry with a lot of room to explore and it’s not yet clear how far the technology can go. These challenges are meant to be crossed, and it all comes down to the drive to find the smallest, fastest system that is low cost and delivers the best performance.

New Print And Apply Labeling System With Intelligent Motion™ Technology Delivers What No Other Labeller Can
As manufacturers implement lean practices, operations teams are focused on high value tasks with limited time to focus on end-of-line labeling systems that require mechanical adjustments and frequent intervention.

Responding to these needs, Videojet Technologies, has taken an innovative approach to Print & Apply labeling LPA design with the Videojet 9550 to address, and fix, the common causes of lost productivity.

This new design removes the mechanisms that frequently cause everyday operational problems, such as label jams and routine manual adjustments. Ondrej Kruk, global business unit manager at Videojet adds “The 9550 with Direct Apply places the label onto the pack without the need for a tamp or air blast applicator, achieving throughput of up to 150 packs per minute for typical 4” x 6” GS1 barcode labels. This means it never misses a label, even after line build-backs. By incorporating Intelligent Motion™ technology, the entire system is precisely and electronically controlled, targeting zero unscheduled downtime on production lines.

"Customer feedback about lost production time made it clear there was a need for advanced labelling technology to improve operating performance. In response, we designed the new Videojet 9550 LPA system incorporating Intelligent Motion™ technology,” said Steve Buckby, vice president of Innovation at Videojet Technologies. “Intelligent Motion™ technology enables all the design elements of the machine to be automatically controlled with precision, allowing us to simply takeout the parts and adjustments that make most other labelling machines fail.”

Manual adjustments are one of the main causes of daily operational problems, resulting in costly downtime and production loss. The direct drive system, with Intelligent Motion™ technology, feeds and places labels accurately even at high line speeds without the use of manual adjustments, clutches or nip rollers. No adjustments means that only two operator touches are now required to manage job selection and web changeover, complemented by a collapsible mandrel to ensure quick label changes. The Direct Drive system with Intelligent Motion™ technology, unlike conventional print & apply labellers, controls the entire label path ensuring web tension is maintained from start to finish, irrespective of speed or label size.

The unique ability of the new Videojet 9550 Direct Apply system, removes the need for complex applicators for mainstream top or side label applications, reducing the number of labels being incorrectly applied or mangled during application. Requiring no factory air, the new system is the only solution to print and directly apply labels to cases and trays at high speed. The 9550’s print engine also incorporates Intelligent Motion™ technology for precise ribbon feed and printhead control, ensuring optimum print quality and improved performance. Through use of a clutch-less ribbon drive, the 9550 substantially reduces ribbon waste and improves print head life.

The trends toward increasing retailer and regulatory requirements and increasing SKU complexity is a main concern for manufacturers seeking to safeguard their operations from costly labelling errors. In order to help manufacturers improve quality and adhere to applicable standards, the 9550 comes equipped with the Videojet industry-leading Clarity touch screen interface which includes intuitive job selection, comprehensive feedback and diagnostics to minimize human error. This single, easy-to-use interface provides manufacturers with built-in Code Assurance solutions that focus on getting the right label on the right case, time after time.

Kruk commented “With virtually zero unscheduled downtime and the highly-reliable Direct Apply label placement, we can finally give customers what no other labeller has been able to provide for the past 20 years. The application of Intelligent Motion™ technology to eliminate the mechanical adjustments used in everyday operation reduces manufacturers’ hidden costs and drives productivity gains.”
