ICE Speeds Up Making New Labels For Latest Legislation
Leading coding company Interactive Coding (ICE) is offering a solution to help food companies prepare for a forthcoming new EU food regulation.

Due to come into force in December 2014, the Food Information to Consumers Regulations (FIC) will set rules on how foods should be labelled and what information is mandatory as well as the presentation, style and positioning of this information. New rules for advertisement and distance selling are also included.

On average it takes around three months to plan, design and sign off a new label, and with some leading brands it can take even longer. To help speed up the process of applying the necessary information, ICE has developed its CLARiTY® software, which comes as standard with all of its coders, to give users greater flexibility to make the required changes to labels.

Although a large proportion of the legislation will affect pre-printed label design the CLARiTY® software can specifically fulfil the regulation where it impacts on overprinted information.

The new regulation covers a number of key requirements aimed at making ingredient information much more accessible to consumers. Changes to minimum font size, allergen information, country of origin and nutrition labelling are also covered.

A key benefit of the software enables the user to select almost any Windows TrueType font in any size on the label. For example, a minimum font size of 1.2mm is required for large packs and 0.9mm for medium packs less than 80cm2.

New rules requiring allergen information to be clearly distinguished from the rest of the list of ingredients can be met through the ability to highlight, make bold, underline or change the font for these details. …/
For meat producers, another important feature of the software is the flexibility of being able to add variable information regarding fat content onto the label.

The CLARiTY® software is also able to include full traceability, which will meet new rules for country of origin or place of provenance information.

Chris Simpson, ICE’s managing director comments: “The CLARiTY® software gives much more flexibility to our customers, particularly small and medium sized companies, who have less capacity, resource and guidance when regulations such as these are implemented.”

Reliability Best Advert For Linx CJ400
Contract packer Universal Flexible Packaging says the reliability and simplicity of the Linx CJ400 continuous ink jet printer is helping it meet the increasingly exacting demands of its customers.

After trialling it against a competitor machine, the company was so impressed it bought six Linx CJ400s to replace various thermal transfer printers, label printers and drop on demand printers.

The award-winning printers are now coding onto an array of containers at the family-run company’s Leicester factory, where the engineering supervisor Steve Potter enthuses: “We simply turn them on at the beginning of a shift and turn them off at the end.”

Universal Flexible Packaging produces high-end bag-in-box confectionery products which then go into a shipping carton. The Linx CJ400s print onto filled preformed pouches while the pouch is passing through a sealer. They also code onto inner and outer boxes on a semi-automatic line and onto secondary packaging, where the coder is placed on the out-feed of a case taper.

Different packaging requirements can mean that new lines are built ad hoc to meet demand, so Universal Flexible Packaging was looking for the flexibility to move printers easily between lines

The versatility of the Linx CJ400 has even enabled Universal Flexible Packaging to expand its range of services, as Steve Potter explains: “We can now also code onto plastic tubs, bottles, buckets and all manner of shapes and sizes – some of which we were unable to do before we used the Linx. We’ve even used it to print on to a label while the label is being automatically applied to a bag.”

Using Linx Black versatile mixed-base ink T583, the Linx CJ400 copes easily with coding onto the varnished card of high-value packs, where ink adhesion can be an issue. The machine’s clean operation is also important in a hygienic environment; staff wear gloves, hair nets, no jewellery, and use hand wash stations.

Steve Potter adds: “We have a huge range of customers to satisfy who are becoming increasingly involved in the production process, including auditing the site and watching the first production run.

“The Linx CJ400’s compact foot print and ease of operation were also important - our operators and engineers found them to be far more user-friendly than other coders. They were also easier to move from one line to another due to their low centre of gravity and compact size, while servicing via the service module is also very easy.

“The printers are very good for our high end premium products that are usually quite small or present a small target area for coding. The user interface is very easy to use – if you are able to use a phone then you can use the printer. Service modules are quick and easy to change … the Linx CJ400 is a very clean machine and requires little in the way of upkeep.”

Launched in 2011, the Linx CJ400 was the winner of the ‘Most Innovative Processing or Packaging Machine’ category at the PPMA (Processing & Packaging Machinery Association) Group Industry Awards 2012.

CorrStream Reinvents Printing On Corrugated Packaging
Full colour digital printing on corrugated packaging will be transformed following the unveiling of pioneering CorrStream® technology, according to the Sun Automation Group, a worldwide leader in the supply of corrugated equipment.

Sun launched its new range of high-speed digital, single pass, full colour corrugated printers at a special event in front of an invited audience of packaging professionals at the Group’s EMEA headquarters in Bristol, England.

The series of three printers – Corrstream 66, 40 and 20 – offers the corrugated converting sector unrivalled speed, reduced costs, efficiency and outstanding print quality, bringing inkjet sophistication to mainstream applications as a real alternative to conventional analogue methods.

As well as the key ability to ease the pressure on box makers’ operating costs at the lowest batch levels, compared to flexographic printing, Corrstream allows for increased value added through print on demand as well as the opportunity for convertors to reduce or remove traditional costs such as origination and plate making.

In addition, further opportunities exist for corrugated to align with increasing digitalisation in other packaging media to provide solutions for brand owner/retailer seasonal or event-based on-shelf promotions that require, for example, short-run or variable print capabilities.

Corrstream CMYK digital printers allow graphics to press in hours instead of days, small or large production runs at speeds of up to 8000 sheets per hour, personalisation and graphic changes, data merge capabilities and mass customisation.

Wide format, flat bed digital printing technology is not new to the corrugated sector, but with increasing demands from brand owners and retailers for shorter order run lengths with fast turnaround times, and point of sale packaging to attract and engage consumers, CorrStream is the first digital application to offer reliability, output levels and aqueous inks more familiar to Box Plants and their needs.

Another major development to emerge from the launch is that Sun will also have aqueous inks available for Corrstream to print on coated materials by the end of the year, without customers having to make any changes to the existing set up of the equipment.

Interest in the Corrstream single pass solution – one of only two in the world which use this technique -– has been phenomenal, with the company’s Corrstream demonstration centre in Bristol booked by potential customers for visits and open days for several weeks after it’s unveiling on April 3 2014.

Sun’s Global Product Manager for Corrstream, Sean Moloney, said: “This innovative technology, which incorporates new inks and print systems, is the culmination of several years’ development work and will bring a unique print dimension to the corrugated industry. Despite deploying some very sophisticated systems, we’re confident Corrstream is an inkjet printer for mainstream production that users will find familiar.

“Simple to operate, the three equipment option sizes provide High Quality Post Print (HQPP) print quality at lower costs on the typical batch sizes now seen at many plants. It’s only a matter of time for industrial inkjet to take hold in the graphics market on corrugated. This range of machines and their modular design will future-proof corrugated companies and help them to capitalise on new opportunities, with early adopters sure to benefit as the margins from other print processes come under increasing pressure.”

“Interest from marketers and packaging buyers in digital packaging is growing, due to its ability to provide high quality, variable graphics with short lead-times and lower stock costs. The corrugated industry needs to react and become yet more flexible in offering even greater variety in print to aid sales in an ever more sophisticated consumer space.”
