New MX240 Printer Set To Be A Best Seller
Now, TSC´s highly anticipated industrial printer series MX240 is launched and it looks as if the revolutionary development will become a best seller in the entire differentiated product family of this innovative and worldwide acting manufacturer.

The three versions of the new thermal transfer printer series will set high standards in industrial label printing. Top performance fea-tures, a futuristic design and a high-resolution 4.3“ color display combined with the latest touch-panel technology make the MX240 series an efficient and smarter choice for all applications including manufacturing, logistics, shipping and product identification. Thanks to its specific attributes the versatile barcode printer is excellently suited to professional labeling in clean room environments and to produce durable miniature labels too.
The MX240 series offers plenty of memory, including 256 MB SDRAM and 128 MB FLASH, which provides easy storage of fonts, international character sets and graphics. The MX series also includes a secure digital (SD) FLASH memory card slot for inexpensively adding up to 32 GB of memory. A powerful 32 bit high-performance processor enables fast print speeds and ensures continuous printing because the MX240 series was specially built from the ground up to deliver 24x7 mission critical performance to boost productivity and efficiency.

Standard features include built-in Ethernet, two USB hosts for key-board and scanner connections and USB 2.0, parallel and serial in-terfaces for easy integration in IT-structure. An industry-standard GPIO port is available as an option. But an absolute novelty is the 4.3” resistive and back lighted color display with six menu buttons and touch panel operation.

TSC´s TSPL-EZ™ firmware supports three different printer lan-guages including TSC own printer language. It also features a file manager and programming language that support stand-alone and down-time programming solutions to print labels without connection to a host computer or optionally be able to continue printing labels during times of network failure. For creating powerful printer interface applications with multiple type of hosts there are internal scalable True Type fonts and a BASIC interpreter with file manager. Additionally, as a silver-level participant in the SAP® Printer Vendor program, TSC developed device types to simplify document printing from SAP applications.
With the extraordinary and innovative three models of the MX se-ries, TSC set clear accents in the print quality too. The MX240 prints at 203 dpi at speeds up to fourteen inches per second, MX340 offers 300 dpi resolution at speeds up to twelve inches per second, and the MX640 features 600 dpi high resolution which makes it ideal for printing very small 2D barcodes, graphics, fine print and other ultra-high-resolution images. Without any problems 600 m ribbons and 8.2”OD media rolls can be processed up to a print width of 104 mm. The label roll is motor driven and works pre-cisely and quietly.

Although the MX looks very attractive and provides first-class fea-tures, the three printer models are extremely resistant, powerful and durable. They feature a die-cast aluminum print mechanism housed in a very strong yet lightweight cabinet to ensure high-volume label-ing under the toughest production environments and rough condi-tions around the clock. The compact assembly easily can be de-tached from the cabinet and thereby it is ideal for resellers who want to develop low-cost customized solutions for packaging, product marking and other applications.
For the MX series too, TSC offers a standard two-year limited war-ranty – the best in industry.

Food Safety Over Printing Inks Prompts Move From Mineral Oil Inks
Safety issues over the migration of mineral-oils into the food supply chain and the possible health hazards they could present to consumers are a cause for concern for the food industry.

While there are many potential sources for this contamination, research over the last few years has identified the main one to be the leaching of chemicals derived from mineral oil-based printing inks.

It has been estimated that more than half of the cardboard used in Europe is recycled1. Much of this recycled carton-board which is used in food packaging, is produced through the recycling of newspapers. And, it is the mineral-oils from this newsprint ink that is finding its way into the cardboard during the recycling process. These mineral oils contain aromatic and saturated hydrocarbons which can be easily absorbed and over time, accumulate in the body.

Some of the most significant research into the migration of mineral oils in to food packaging was conducted by the government-run food safety Canton Laboratory in Zurich, Switzerland. They identified that cardboard typically used in food packaging may contain significant amounts of mineral oils as a result of printing inks from recycled newspapers.

Further research was undertaken for the German Food Ministry examining every day products from German supermarkets. This found these hydrocarbons could also pass from the cardboard outer container and through the inner bags into the product, and when consumed, into the body itself.

In the UK, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) now operates a rolling programme of surveys looking at various components of food packaging. As part of this ongoing programme, the FSA has also looked into the migration of components from printing inks.

Although this research has identified the presence of mineral oils from printing ink in recycled carton food packaging, the results regarding the longer term health risks remain inconclusive.

To date, while the European Union (EU) has set specific migration limits (SMLs) for components of food packaging and other articles, for example eating and cooking utensils, there are currently no SMLs for the migration of printing inks and mineral oils in to carton board food packaging. Despite the lack of legislation at this point, many in the industry feel it is only a matter of time.

For brand owners and manufacturers, the safety of its food packaging is of paramount importance. Therefore, the potential risks from any migration of mineral oil-based ink into their products continues to be a cause for concern. As a result, brand owners are becoming more demanding of their packaging suppliers to seek assurances regarding the safety of its food packaging.

There is still much for the industry to debate about the use of newsprint in the production of recycled container board. However, EuPIA, the European Printing Ink Association has already taken steps to address this, and has issued guidelines2 for the use of ink in food packaging to reduce the health risks. It now advocates the use of specially formulated low migration and mineral oil-free printing inks for use in this sector.

In advance of the introduction of any specific legislation, food packaging suppliers need to take action. Not only to meet the demands of their customers now, but also remain one step ahead of any mandatory regulations that are likely to be introduced in the future. The development of mineral oil-free inks has been a major breakthrough in the commitment of this sector to reduce risk. However, in order for this to be successful, these alternative inks need to be globally available, fully validated and have an equivalent performance to existing mineral oil-based fluids.

Unlike the traditional petroleum-based mineral oil printing inks, these mineral oil-free alternatives are based on vegetable oils such as soybean and linseed oil. Not only are these fluids non-hazardous and fully sustainable, they are also beneficial in that their biodegradable properties assist with de-inking printed matter during the recycling process.

Domino, a major global manufacturer of inks and coding and marking technologies, and an active member of EuPIA, is already making a commitment to address the risks of chemicals from printing inks used to code outer case packages. The company’s dedicated fluids research and development team has introduced a 100% mineral oil-free ink for its C6000 high resolution printers. Designed specifically for food packaging applications, its new 950BK vegetable oil-based black ink complements Domino’s existing consumables range, offering food manufacturers a safer alternative by reducing the risk of contamination to ensure the integrity of the packaging.

Using the combination of its new 100% mineral oil-free ink, Domino’s C6000 outer case coders provide a safe solution for printing text, graphics and supply chain compliance bar codes onto cardboard food packages. This is achieved by eliminating the risk posed by the migration of harmful toxins leaching from the print on the cardboard container and into the food inside. In addition, combined with the C-Series’ ability to deliver increased overall equipment effectiveness, this gives brand owners and manufacturers not only a low-risk solution, but also one that delivers real productivity benefits.

Labelling Breakthough AquaSense Keeps Food Fresher Longer
AquaSense™, the latest label innovation from Essentra Packaging, has been designed to help maintain and control the moisture content within packs ensuring the goods do not dry out and are kept fresh – giving consumers more control than ever over the products they buy.

As part of Essentra Packaging’s Protect range, AquaSense™ is the first example of Essentra’s Active Label Technology and has been developed and jointly patented in conjunction with Essentra Porous Technologies.

It features a unique absorbent AquaSense™ pad which is activated by the consumer on opening the pack or tub. The pad is placed under a tap and soaks up a specific amount of water which it then releases it within the pack, keeping contents fresh, controlling humidity and reducing product waste due to goods drying out.

This new technology AquaSense™ pad can be supplied in a variety of formats and sizes and is designed to meet the specific needs of the product it is protecting. Options include high impact graphics and designs which can combine with the freshness capability of the pad to deliver a message on adding the liquid, interacting with the consumer and acting as a means to deliver promotional campaigns.

Because the AquaSense™ pad soaks up only as much moisture as it needs, it does away with the need for the consumer to measure the dose – it can simply be held under a tap or dipped in a glass of water to continue functioning just as effectively, giving the consumer a much more interactive relationship with the brand through the packaging.
And to underline the versatility of the development, Essentra Packaging wants to hear from manufacturers or brand owners who see the benefits of this Active Label Technology and its ability to deliver and control humidity and freshness for their products.

Martin Dallas, Managing Director - Essentra Speciality Technologies, says: “The project has been a great example of how we can leverage the significant expertise throughout Essentra to design a product to meet the customer and wider category need.

“This is a genuinely exciting development and we believe there are many potential applications out there – that’s why we want to hear from fellow innovators who can see the possibilities this offers and we will be demonstrating at our shows and exhibitions this year”

Dallas continues: “Combining our material and packaging knowledge across Essentra has led to the design of this exciting product and we see this as just the start of how we can create new and innovative products for customers using our collective capabilities to design new products our customers need.”
