Allen Coding To Show Newly Launched Hitachi Inkjet Printers And Ngt4+ Thermal Transfer Coder
Allen Coding will be highlighting a wide range of high performance marking and coding systems for the food sector at PPMA at the end of September.

The newly launched Hitachi RX2 and UX continuous inkjet printers and NGT4+ thermal transfer coder complete with advanced a:touch 2 touch screen and a:control software will be on display in the UK for the first time.

The company will also be demonstrating a Super Compact hot foil coder and several models from its XL range of cost effective intermittent and continuous thermal transfer coders, including the 53XL80 with PR5 handset and 53XLC with iView touch screen.

The new environmentally-friendly Hitachi UX inkjet printer series offers reduced fluid consumption, ease of use and ergonomically designed print head ideally suited to printing on drinks containers such as milk and juice cartons. Using the latest patented Hitachi technology, a new fluid consumption reduction system ensures it is one of the lowest consumers of make-up available on the printer market, thereby significantly reducing running costs.

Specially developed for exceptionally fast and challenging production environments, the latest Hitachi RX2 continuous inkjet printer offers high speed printing and superior print head technology for stable drop placement and print quality. It is capable of applying best before dates, logos, graphics, barcodes, lot numbers and 2D data matrix codes onto uneven or flexible substrates including glass, plastics, metal and rubber.

An economical yet high pressure ink system and low maintenance minimises the overall total cost of ownership of the RX2. The ‘quick disconnect’ design of the main ink filter allows easy and convenient replacement by the customer, without any tools. Operation is via an intuitive 10.4 inch colour TFT-LCD touch panel display.

The RX2 is manufactured using Hitachi components ensuring high quality, reliability and excellent value for money. The print head is produced from cast aluminium making it ideal for use in harsh environments and to facilitate easy cleaning, low maintenance and long-lasting operation. It is easy to integrate into existing production lines and networks and the print head can be quickly installed either inline or at 90 degrees. It also offers IP55 dust and drip proof protection.

The standard RX2 can print up to three lines of text (option: up to five lines) and 120 characters (option: up to 1000 characters). It can operate at speeds up to 1148 characters per second, with the option to upgrade to 2296 characters.

The high speed NGT4+ thermal transfer coder is ideal for chemical, agricultural and hardware manufacturers who require large amounts of information to be applied to packaging or labels. It has a compact and lightweight design and can be easily switched between intermittent and continuous mode via the robust and flexible a:touch 2 which is the company’s latest Windows 7 based IPC touch screen with a:control printer software. The a:touch 2 features a 10.1inch colour display, has a multilingual user interface with brightly coloured icons and allows the configuration of up to ten NGT units in a network.

The NGT4+ offers excellent print quality, can be easily integrated into other packaging and labelling equipment and has a USB interface for back up and formatting. The system offers a maximum print area of 107mm x 90mm and can run at speeds up to 500mm per second (intermittent mode) and 29m per minute (continuous mode).

Allen Coding’s well-proven and cost effective 53XL80 thermal transfer coder with PR5 handset will also be on display. As well as a two component, space saving design, the 53XL80 offers Ethernet and USB connectivity, and dual processors (one for communication and one for printing) to ensure high speed performance. Developed to provide seamless Unicode operation for efficient printing of variable information in a wide range of languages, the 53XL80 offers a 600-metre ribbon capacity for extended use and minimal downtime. It provides reliable and accurate printing of barcodes, sell-by dates, batch numbers, prices, source codes and other text and graphics, including Julian date and 2D data matrix codes. It features a maximum print area of 53mm x 80mm.

The 53XLC is a continuous version with print area of 53mm x 300mm. It will be on display with Allen Coding’s iView touch screen which can be configured in a wide range of languages.

Allen Coding’s Super Compact hot foil coder incorporates the latest digital technology for unrivalled print accuracy and major speed and quality benefits while ensuring that the foil is used to maximum efficiency. It offers a maximum print area of 50mm x 30mm and is capable of speeds up to 800 prints per minute.

Videojet Launches New Dark Red to Light Red Color-Change Inks for Retort Applications
Food manufacturers have utilized the retort or autoclave process for years, typically to help preserve vegetables, beans, fruit, soup, sauces, baby food, meat/fish, ready-to-eat meals and pet food. To meet code requirements before, during, and after the retort process, Videojet is pleased to announce its latest ink innovations, V476 and V521, for use with its 1000 Line of Continuous Inkjet (CIJ) printers. V476 is qualified for use in Videojet standard 1000 Line printers and V521 for use in its 1000 Line Ultra High Speed models.

Codes produced with these new inks are designed to provide a noticeable colour change from dark red to light red when exposed to heat and moisture during the retort process. The colour change occurs after the material has been retorted for several minutes at 240-250°F (116-121°C). This allows processors to determine whether or not a particular item has been properly exposed to the retort process.

“These new inks are an example of Videojet innovation in fluids for ink jet technology,” states Heidi Wright, Business Unit Manager for Supplies at Videojet. “We are continually looking for ways we can deliver unique fluids formulations to meet customer needs and are very excited to bring these products to the industry. These new inks are a result of our dedicated research and development initiatives. Working closely with our customers to determine their production needs, we collect application data that can be used in creating formulations for a specific set of production requirements.”

MEK and methanol-free, Videojet V476 and V521 inks provide a clear color-change from dark red to light red and offer reduced bleeding of the code as compared to other thermochromic ink offerings. Primary uses for V476 and V521 inks are for processed food containers such as metal cans, glass jars, flexible pouches, plastic bowls, and trays. These inks may also be used in food or pharmaceutical applications where the goal is to reduce certain solvent plant emissions, including MEK.

With 40 plus years of ink development experience, Videojet continues to invest significant resources to create leading coding and ink solutions for a vast range of substrates and applications. Addressing a variety of customer challenges, we continuously monitor packaging trends, regulations, and customer needs to innovate and help ensure that our solutions meet and exceed manufacturers’ printing requirements.

Datalase Announce New Partnership With Total Brand Security
Leading colour change technology company, Datalase, has announced a new partnership with Total Brand Security – a global leader in brand protection and security.

Initially targeting the Food & Drink industry, the companies have worked together to develop a new digital can-end printing system for Infant Formula.

Total Brand Security (TBS) produces both the ink formulation and the marking technology, which utilise the proprietary colour change technology from Datalase. Under the White Dot Ink brand, TBS has developed a new secure marking solution that enhances traceability, security and product authentication for products known to be at risk from counterfeiting or contamination and security issues.

Dr. Chris Wyres said: “The White Dot Ink solution is a great step forward, enabling brand owners to print high quality QR codes on can ends, which allows consumers to quickly learn more about the product and validate its authenticity by scanning the code with their mobile phone".

Adrian Simmons, Managing Director of TBS comments: “The TBS system is a turnkey solution for manufacturers to be able to put unique codes onto packaging – everything from 2D bar codes and batch numbers through to expiration dates and websites can be included.

“The data is applied by a high precision, low power laser which delivers information which is easy to read with a smart phone and has low reject rates. The system can be used with modular lasers, two on every line to ensure 100% uptime, or in house systems and the complete set up is linked to an ERP system. This ensures complete traceability of cans through the entire supply chain; in case of any recall issues. The data mark is also covered with a clear varnish so there is no risk of rubbing or removal of the information, giving an even higher level of security and confidence in the system for the manufacturer and consumer.”

TBS and Datalase are now working with a number of manufacturers of dairy products to include this enhanced product authentication solution.
