Major Changes Ahead For Food Information In Foodservice
The new EU Regulation 1169/2011 on the provision of food information to consumers (FIC) will come into force at midnight on 13 December.

It brings about a major change to the way food information must be provided in shops and restaurants.

Among the many changes that will be enforced are new rules on highlighting allergens in the list of ingredients on pre-packed foods. The new information rules won't only apply to packaged foods. Food business operators who provide food sold loose, such as meals served in restaurants, schools, airlines etc will also need to accurately declare which allergenic ingredients are present in the foods they sell.

Restaurants and other catering outlets can chose how they inform customers about the allergens in the food/meals they sell. They can do this with signage, recipe cards or verbally.

"All sectors of the food industry will be affected by the changes," notes Simon Flanagan, Food Safety Consultant at RSSL, which has worked with some of the big name companies in the food service sector to help them prepare. "The rules around allergens are especially challenging and some of the label statements on pre-packed foods that we are familiar with will no longer be permitted. Any retailers, caterers, food suppliers and manufacturers that are still unsure of how the changes affect them should seek help urgently."

In addition to the new requirements on labelling in restaurants and on foods sold loose, there are also changes for pre-packaged foods.

"The "Contains or Allergy Advice Box" will not be allowed and instead, allergens will have to be highlighted on the label," notes Barbara Hirst of RSSL. "Cereals need to be labelled as the source of gluten, rather than just stating the word gluten.

Customers may take some time to get used to the changes, but we have been working with many of our food manufacturing clients to help them prepare for the changes."

Allergen labelling rules are not the only changes that are coming. The new law combines two Directives into one: 2000/13/EC - labelling, presentation and advertising of foodstuffs; and 90/496/EEC - nutrition labelling for foodstuffs. Therefore, the new rules will also alter how nutritional information is to be given on processed foods, and how to handle the origin labelling of fresh meat from pigs, sheep, goats and poultry. The font size on labels is also being addressed.

Get It Right Quickly & Simply With The Enhanced Linx 7900
The enhanced Linx 7900 continuous ink jet printer now comes with added capabilities to help food customers print perfectly, minimise mistakes and measure production output.

Its improved software delivers quick, time-saving changeovers between products or messages, while simple automated set-up helps ensure users get it right first time.

New Linx QuickSwitch® Plus delivers simple, automated code set up, reducing the risk of costly errors and cutting the time required to switch products – perfect for customers with frequent changeovers.

By simply connecting a barcode scanner, the Linx 7900 can intelligently decipher the barcode to select a message from its memory, edit the message content, set the date and choose parameters such as print orientation, height and width and position on the pack – all without operator intervention. Data can also be sourced from a PC or PLC, giving more automated code set up options.

In addition Linx PrintSync® - first introduced in the award-winning Linx CJ400 - enables automatic print format selection, using the line speed to ensure the best possible print. This simplified process saves time and guarantees the Linx 7900 delivers its optimum print quality.

Meanwhile the new Print History log feature solves the issue of accurate product output measurement by recording which codes have been printed, how many times and over what period – allowing accurate measurement of production line output.

Capable of logging up to 400 separate print sessions, this replaces time-consuming and error-prone manual recording.

The Linx 7900 already offers a wealth of features, including Linx Insight® software allowing users to monitor and control their printers through a web browser, either via a PC or a web enabled smartphone.

Ink system technology enables the Linx 7900 printer to run for up to 9,000 hours or 18 months between services.

And as the Linx 7900 is one of the most reliable CIJ printers on the market, it comes with a warranty of up to 18 months at no extra cost.

Charles Randon, Senior Product Manager at Linx, says: “Our customers tell us they are concerned about errors being made by employees during the setting-up process, especially where the item being coded changes frequently. We also know they need to measure line output, and manual recording takes time and isn’t always accurate.

“That’s why we’ve added these new features to the Linx 7900, which will help customers to save time, reduce coding errors, and measure their production output more accurately.”

Food Firms Will Save Pots Of Money Thanks To Sheep Print’s Label Compliance Offer
With the deadline looming for food companies to get their labelling obligations for allergens in order to meet new UK statutory requirements, Sheep Print one of the UK’s leading producer of high quality in-mould labelling (IML) for food pots is coming to the rescue by offering free printing plates up to the value of £1,000 until the 31st of January 2015.

This amazing limited special promotion is applicable for up to six-printing plates for both pots and lids and even includes free minor artwork amends. Designed to help companies meet the new rules which come into force in December and require food producers to list on the label all allergens used in production.

UK-based Sheep Print is a BRC accredited supplier and offers an extensive range of tamper-proof IML printed plastic containers, used for a wide variety of food products including ready meals, snacks, soups, yoghurts, breakfast cereals, desserts, ice cream and numerous related items.

Unlike many of its competitors, Sheep Print can also provide short-batch runs of 10,000 units of IML pots, offering slick and professionally designed pots for product launches and trials, as well as quick project turnaround times, typically four to five weeks once the artwork has been signed off, compared to the industry-standard two months.

Superbly-finished pots to enhance brand visibility for short-batch runs provide added value for SMEs keen to present an established appearance, as well as larger organisations who need to test the market with new products to assess the response before taking them to a larger audience.

Sheep Print’s Head of UK Operations, Milda Laurikiete, said: “The free print plates offer we are providing for a limited time will help companies offset the cost of reprinting. This special promotion along with free artwork changes will hopefully help far more companies to comply quicker with the forthcoming UK regulations concerning allergens.”

The company provides a one-stop shop for plastic pots and lids, including full colour printing and metallic options, as well as the finished articles, which are all produced at its approved plants in Lithuania. Sheep Print Pots are produced to BRC Food standards and ISO 9001. They are lightweight and can be stacked, clear or coloured, come in various shapes and sizes from 120ml to 2L with or without handles.

For bigger runs IML is more cost-efficient for a brand owner and gives a far more professional finish than self-adhesive labelling, which can be labour intensive. Sheep Print can also print on both sides of the lid and pot, which is extremely useful for displaying extra information such as mixing quantities, cooking instructions or further marketing information.

Large minimum order quantities for pots which can prevent product development work are also a thing of the past for companies producing food to go and ready meals, who may just want to test the market, thanks to the smaller batch run option. This linked with innovative designs, flexible production and quick turnaround times enables Sheep Print to provide an unbeatable solution, which also meets the stringent food preparation and labelling regulations.

Originally established in Lithuania, Sheep Print started offering IML pots to the UK market a few years ago and its pots are used by leading multiple retailers such as Morrisons and the Co-op’s own ranges and also by suppliers to Waitrose, Holland & Barrett, Selfridges and Café Nero amongst numerous others.
