Foodchain Launches Triage Labelling Service To Help Food Industry Meet FIR
FoodChain Europe, an authority on food labelling and legal compliance has launched an innovative new ‘triage’ labelling advice service designed to help food manufacturers meet the impending deadline for compliance with the new Food Information Regulations (FIR).

Under the new regulations, manufacturers must update details in products both on-pack and on websites by 13 December 2014 or face a 28 day compliance notice.

Manufacturers not rectifying labels within that period face fines of £5000 per offence.

FoodChain Europe is offering three levels of triage with pricing according to volume of work and urgency:
· Stage 1: Is the label compliant? Yes/No: £25 per label
· Stage 2: Mandatory requirement report – advice on which requirement needs to be fixed: £50
· Stage 3: Label reconstruction, FIR Compliant pack copy: £250

Stuart Shotton, Food Integrity Director at FoodChain Europe, and a former Trading Standards Officer said: “Although the deadline to meet the new FIR regulations requirements on allergen labelling is fast approaching, our current workload indicates that many food manufacturers are still not ready. At this late stage all they need is a quick verification process from experts to guide them on whether their labels are compliant or not and to guide them swiftly to becoming ‘FIR friendly’. With a potential £5000 fine PER offence it pays to invest now.”

Advanced Dynamics’ Automated Labelling Solutions Removes Rsi Risk For Food Firms
A leading supplier of automated, high quality labelling systems is offering food and beverage manufacturers the opportunity for reducing the risk of increased claims from staff for repetitive strain injury (RSI).

Advanced Dynamics Ltd, the sole UK distributor of the Pack Leader range of label applicators, is offering a free audit for food companies looking to replace manual intervention with automatic labelling systems. Automating repetitive processes can save time, money and significantly boost output without making much of a dent in a company’s capital budget.

In addition to offering a range of systems for applying labels efficiently and accurately every time – freeing staff for more productive tasks – Advanced Dynamics is also launching new affordable technology for the de-stacking of pots and tubs for filling of soups, stews and sauces.

This latest machine development ensures a fast, uninterrupted flow of containers that are always in the correct position, whether for filling of viscous or semi-viscous products, delivering significant production benefits for food to go and ready meal companies amongst others, while meeting stringent food preparation and labelling regulations.

If pots are incorrectly placed or labels skewed, damaged or out of position, then production is interrupted and delays occur in getting products to market, while if these faults do get through they can damage the integrity of the brand.

Adhesive labels must be applied correctly so as not to compromise the presentation quality and critical message to consumers, and at speed to help products get to market quickly. To meet these objectives food and drink manufacturers should be turning to cost-effective automated systems.

Advanced Dynamics’ managing director, Malcolm Little, said: “Automatic solutions take the hassle and risk out of many mundane and repetitive tasks in the food industry that can result in human error. We have innovative and affordable equipment available that can provide companies with a cutting edge to their processes.”

Pack Leader’s accurate and robust fully-automated label applicators cater for a variety of container sizes, cartons and bottle shapes, whether glass or plastic, and can reliably label the full range of package configurations to suit individual budgets, operating conditions and product characteristics.

By tapping into the latest technologies, production processes and methods related to automation food manufacturers can maximise productivity and profits to ensure their future sustainability in an increasingly competitive marketplace

Simple, Affordable Laser Coding With The New Linx SL1
Linx Printing Technologies is making laser coding more accessible than ever with the launch of the Linx SL1, an entry-level solution that enables more food and beverage companies to achieve a high quality code which adds value to their packaging.

The Linx SL1 laser coder has the speed, reliability, ease of use and low cost of ownership synonymous with the Linx scribing laser range, but is tailored particularly to customers who may have thought laser’s benefits were out of reach.

The Linx SL1 delivers class-leading coding speeds thanks to the use of lightweight and ultra-fast mirrors. It offers 20 per cent more power than other products in its class, but at the same time uses much less laser energy in the coding process, which together with its robust stainless steel design further enhances its reliability and longevity.

The new laser coder also offers greater coding versatility than comparable models, with the ability to produce multiple lines of text and logos in one message, as well as machine readable codes such as QR and Data Matrix codes. This versatility enables the Linx SL1 to apply decorative codes capable of matching the look and feel of the packaging design.

Another benefit is the coder’s size. One of the most compact one-box laser solutions on the market, and weighing only 12.5kg, it is simple to position on line and fits easily into tight spaces, coding in any orientation.

Set up and code changes are easy, thanks to the exclusive LinxDraw® software which provides intuitive operation, secure message creation on- and off-line and tamper-proof coding.

The Linx SL1 offers all the established benefits of laser coding. The technology uses no fluids and consumables, reducing running costs, eliminating mess and spills, and removing the need to store inks and solvents. No production time is lost to cleaning printheads and there are no unknown variable costs. Fewer moving parts mean less maintenance and no time-consuming start-up and power-down procedures – a real advantage on lines that don’t run round the clock.

Lasers also create a permanent mark on a product, which can’t be rubbed off, making it the ideal solution for traceability and anti-counterfeiting.

Laser printers deliver high quality, permanent codes on almost any substrate, although the Linx SL1 is particularly suited for coding onto paper and card, as well as plastic or glass on slow-to-medium production line speeds.

Matt Eastham, Linx laser product manager, says: “The affordable Linx SL1 brings the trusted benefits of the established Linx laser range within the grasp of a whole new range of potential customers.

“Simple, flexible and economical, it opens up a new world of coding possibilities to those who may not previously have considered laser as an affordable option.”
