LPR UK Announces New Logistics Partnership With W.R. Carter
Pallet pooling expert LPR UK has announced a new partnership with logistics specialist W.R. Carter & Sons.

The relationship will see LPR’s iconic red pallets transported across the country by W.R. Carter & Sons’ state-of-the-art fleet of trucks. As part of the contract, the logistics expert will facilitate more than 75,000 pallet movements per year for LPR.

Delivery and collections will be carried out by W.R. Carter & Sons’ versatile flatbed trailers, all of which have 26 stacks of pallet capacity.

The partnership forms part of LPR’s wider commitment to sustainability and first-rate customer service. Favouring the ‘one way trip’ model of pallet pooling, LPR is able to ensure the whole process is cost-effective and environmentally friendly. LPR’s one-way-trip process gives manufacturers greater awareness of their costs, as well as enabling LPR to provide a much higher level of pallet quality, thanks to regular sorting and repair.

Similarly, the one-way trip means that lorries aren’t having to make unnecessary trips with partial or no loads – helping to further shrink LPR’s carbon footprint.

Adrian Fleming, regional manager of LPR UK and Ireland, commented: “We’re delighted to announce the partnership with W.R. Carter & Sons. Working alongside such a trusted logistics expert will help us further expand our collection capabilities for our wide network of customers across the UK.

“As part of our company-wide commitment to shoring up sustainability, the partnership with W.R. Carter & Sons represents a fantastic opportunity to reduce the size of our carbon footprint.”

The new contract reflects a busy and exciting 2016 for LPR, whose environmental credentials have recently been recognised at a European level, with leading corporate social responsibility assessor EcoVadis awarding the company a prestigious Gold rating for its sector-leading approach to sustainability.

Automated Carrier Solution For Pre-Packaged Food
CSB-Automation AG has developed a unique load carrier system, the CSB –Hang & Move, to optimise the handling and transport of open trays of pre-packed foods.

Traditionally plastic containers are used for the intermediate storage or in-house transportation of these packs. Loading and unloading by hand requires a lot of manpower while handling the open packs creates hygiene risks.

The CSB-Hang & Move eliminates these problems through the use of a newly-developed load carrier, called the Gondola, into which the filled trays are inserted and then ejected from. The process can be carried out semi- or fully-automatically as required.

The loading and unloading technology of the gondolas offers enormous speed and efficiency gains: at every station, up to 120 packs can be loaded and unloaded in one minute. Combined with complementary conveyor systems, this creates a powerful transport, storage and sorting system that substantially reduces manpower requirements.

For further processing, such as sealing, the trays are simply pushed out, and the Gondola is ready for the next load. As a result, considerably fewer staff are required and utilisation of the packaging machine’s capacities is improved.

In addition, work steps can be more easily separated. For example, filling and sealing operations can work independently of each other and in this way achieve much higher outputs.

The system offers improved hygienic conditions of sensitive meat products, while the gondolas have unique IDs so that traceability and stock management are maintained at all times.

“The CSB-Hang & Move is the key to handling a wide variety of pre-packed products in an efficient manner,” says Max Studer, managing director, CSB-Automation AG. “This is confirmed by reactions from the relevant customer segment. In the USA, for example, we and our partners from mechanical engineering are currently introducing a solution with 11 loading stations and eight unloading stations as well as the required conveyor systems. In this project, too, process steps in production and packaging are completely decoupled in order to achieve better plant utilisation in both areas.”

Food And Drink Supply Chain Calls For Action To Restore Labour Market Confidence
In an unprecedented act of cooperation, representatives from over 30 representative bodies in the UK food supply chain have signed an open letter calling on the Government to act to bring confidence to the labour market.

UK food and drink is a vital core of our national infrastructure. Nearly four million people are employed in growing, harvesting, producing, packaging, selling and serving our food and drink. The hospitality industry alone generates 1 in 8 of all new jobs in the UK, while food manufacturing contributes more to the economy than the automotive and aerospace sectors combined. Food and drink exports are worth £18bn, with Scotch Whisky, chocolate, beer and salmon our top exports by value.

The issues at the heart of the UK’s future relationship with the EU are beginning to crystallise and so it is imperative that the strategic importance of food and drink to our nation’s economic and physical wellbeing is recognised and its future secured. In recent years, Britain has enjoyed access to a wider range of safe, high quality food and drink, at every price point, than ever before. At a time when household incomes are under increasing pressure, shop prices for food have been kept in check for more than three years. If that is to continue, the Government must ensure the place of food and drink in our new industrial strategy and it must place the sector’s priorities at the heart of the Brexit negotiations.

A significant element in our ability to deliver affordable and high-quality food and drink is the part played by workers from the European Union. Some of these people are already leaving the UK in the wake of the referendum result and the devaluation of Sterling. The Government can address this issue directly. It should offer unambiguous reassurance to EU workers throughout our supply chain about their right to remain here.

For the longer term it is important to recognise that these workers from the EU are highly flexible and provide a reservoir of skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled labour without which the industry could not function. In fact, in some sectors of the food chain EU workers predominantly work in skilled and semi-skilled roles.

If we are to adopt a work permit system to control immigration, then it is vital that the whole of the food and drink supply chain receives equal treatment with financial services or the automotive sector. All options should be explored including a workable points based system for shortage occupations, sector-based and seasonal / guest worker schemes and effective transitionary arrangements. If they are not, the UK will face less food choice and higher food prices.

The food and drink industry has not always spoken with one voice. Today it has come together in the national interest to make the strongest possible case for UK food and drink.
That voice must be heard and heeded.
