Waitrose New art.com Fulfilment Centre Officially Opened
Anna Soubry, Minister for Small Business, Industry and Enterprise, has formally opened Waitrose's new state of the art dot.com fulfilment centre.

When at full capacity, the multi-million pound centre, which extends over seven acres in Ullswater Crescent, will fulfil 20,000 orders a week or over 1 million orders a year for Waitrose customers living within the M25. It will allow the supermarket to build its online capacity within the capital by a third.

The facility, which began operating earlier this year, has already created hundreds of jobs for local people with all employees becoming Partners of the John Lewis Partnership. This will rise to approximately 800 when the site is at full capacity.

Among the Waitrose Partners the Minister met is one of the site's team of chefs, Fundador Cangson, who previously worked at the House of Commons as a chef. She was also introduced to Kaleela Harrower, a mother of one, who is able to combine her role as a driver with school runs due to the flexible shift patterns at Coulsdon as well as working dad, Daniel Smith, who is a picker in the warehouse.

During its recruitment for the centre, Waitrose has actively worked with job centres in Croydon and Redhill to offer jobs to those who were previously unemployed, including local young people. This has helped ensure that nearly 20 per cent of the workforce is under the age of 25.

Waitrose has also joined forces with the Shaw Trust to get people with disabilities into employment and work on practical solutions to help them lead fulfilling working lives. For example, one of the delivery drivers, who is profoundly deaf, is able to play a recorded message to alert customers in flats that their delivery has arrived.

Long term career progression is one of Waitrose's key priorities for its Partners at Coulsdon. For example, it runs an apprenticeship scheme for young people. It also operates a 'Warehouse to Wheels' programme in partnership with the Waitrose Regional Distribution Centre at Aylesford to help warehouse pickers progress to being drivers. The Minister met Stuart McDowall who has been promoted to Team Leader since the centre opened.

Waitrose works closely with smaller local and regional suppliers to identify unique products for its customers to enjoy. Camden Hells lager is stocked at the Centre. Camden Town Brewery, who started supplying Waitrose with the craft lager on a small scale in 2013, have grown their sales at 103% year on year. Jasper Cuppaidge, Founder and CEO of the Brewery, joined the opening celebration this morning.

Business Minister, Anna Soubry, said;

"This new distribution centre will create 500 new jobs in Coulsdon and I'm pleased it will also offer apprenticeship opportunities. It's a boost for consumers and for the local economy.”

Andy Kirby, Manager of the Centre, said:

“Our investment in this state of the art centre will allow us to build our online business while creating career opportunities for local people.

"We're delighted that the Minister has joined us to celebrate this exciting development for our business.”

IWM Offers Complete Turnkey Package For Logistics Sector
Industrial Washing Machines (IWM) has recently delivered a complete turnkey solution to PHS Teacrate in Durham after a major investment at the distribution centre.

The T2000 washer/dryer system is ideal for logistics operations and, thanks to a state of the art monitoring system; it helps save energy, water and gas.

Designed, manufactured and installed by the IWM team of engineers, the T2000 was created to wash and dry supermarket distribution crates, dolly’s, plastic crates for foodstuffs and breadbaskets.

Robust, versatile and easy to use, the T2000 machine has a minimum throughput of 1600 trays per hour and a maximum of 2000 for light to medium soiled trays. The trays can be loaded and unloaded manually.

The high performance washing is achieved thanks to the stainless steel screw type nozzles that cover the product on a 360-degree angle. The high capacity tank holds 1500 litres of water, which is pushed through the system via six bespoke pumps with capacities ranging from 3.0 to 5.5 kW.

Equipped with a triple tank and two conveyorised lanes for incoming trays, the T2000 comes complete with a blow dryer module. Once the trays pass through it, they are quickly dried by the stainless steel high velocity air-knife system coupled to the fans.

Electricity, gas and water consumption are carefully monitored through purpose built monitoring systems including pulse-enabled gas, electric and water meters as well as a pulse-enabled waste monitoring irrigation meter.

In addition, the remote mounted control panel accommodates the water pump motor starters, rotary filter motor starters, conveyor motor inverters, a set of gas and fan burner controls, steam extract fan motor starters, dryer/blower fan motor starters, voltage transformers for 24 V dc control, set circuit breakers and mains isolator as well as standard switchgear.

Remote monitoring of energy is made simple thanks to the customised software created by IWM. The software allows users to interrogate data via a Siemens S7 PLC and a Siemen 10’’ HMI. The latter displays all necessary I/O interface modules, temperature analogue I/P cards, power supplies, and fault- finding display and control software.

“The project we did for PHS Teacrate was part of a major investment in plant and machinery,” explained Carl Hollier, managing director at IWM.

“We offered a complete turnkey solution which helped double PHS Teacrate’s crate washing capacity and will generate up to 20 new jobs in the region. As it is our first foray into the logistics market, we hope it will pave the way for many and exciting projects of this kind,” he said.

Philip Dennis Foodservice Saves £38,000 In First Quarter Thanks To Fleetmatics REVEAL
To help meet the challenges of improving efficiency and reducing CO2 emissions in the highly competitive wholesale food market, Philip Dennis Foodservice turned to Fleetmatics and installed the Fleetmatics REVEAL mobile workforce solution on its 96-strong fleet.

By simply reducing idling and harsh driving, the company has seen a dramatic reduction in fuel usage, saving an estimated £38,000 in the first quarter.

Philip Dennis is long-established family-owned food wholesaler with depots in Devon, Oxfordshire and the West Midlands. It serves a broad customer base ranging from cafes and hotels to schools and factories, offering a complete range of frozen, chilled and warm foods together with fresh meat and fish.

Providing high quality yet affordable produce and offering outstanding customer service are not the only core values at Philip Dennis. The company is also committed to reducing its carbon footprint and has even installed a wind turbine and solar panels to produce on-site electricity.

With 60 HGVs, 32 cars and four vans on the road six days a week, Philip Dennis needed to put into place new strategies to save fuel in line with its green credentials. With this in mind, the company recently decided to install Fleetmatics REVEAL.

“When I joined Philip Dennis, I was given the difficult task of reducing fuel consumption as part of the green policy of the company,” explains Mike Carter, Transport Manager at Philip Dennis. “As a former driver, I knew that improving driver behaviour was key to saving fuel but I needed a tool which could enable me to do so. That is why I turned to Fleetmatics REVEAL.”

One negative driving practice that Mike was able to address was idling.

“I noticed that some drivers would leave the engine on while grabbing a coffee from the canteen or filling in their paperwork,” he says. “There were some widespread misconceptions about idling. Some drivers thought that leaving the engine on was necessary to keep the vehicle refrigerated when stopping for a delivery: this is wrong. Ensuring that the doors are shut properly is enough.”

Thanks to Fleetmatics REVEAL’s innovative traffic light system, Mike is now able to visualise on Live Map if a vehicle is regularly parked to perform a job (red), running (green) or idling (amber).

“Whenever one of our vehicles turn to amber I immediately give the driver a call to make him aware of the incident,” he says. “As the drivers are being monitored their driving behaviour has improved dramatically and idling practices have decreased by 90%.”

Thanks to Fleetmatics REVEAL’s driving style summary and live alerts, Philip Dennis was also able to identify and tackle common harsh driving behaviours – including harsh braking, speeding and hard cornering – which can have a significant impact on fuel consumption. In less than year since Fleetmatics REVEAL was first introduced, driving style has improved dramatically, but the company has plans to enhance it even further.

“We are planning to put into place a driver league table across all three depots and the tables will be displayed so that everyone can see them,” explains Mike. “No one wants to be at the bottom of the league, so I’m confident that drivers will be encouraged to do better. We are also planning to give incentives to our top drivers while offering coaching to those at the bottom of the league.”

By reducing idling and harsh driving, Philip Dennis has been able to achieve significant fuel savings, while also improving its customer service. Thanks to the geofencing feature, Mike is now able to determine when each driver visited a customer and calculate an average of arrival times meaning that the company’s sales staff are now in a position to tell new potential customers at what time a vehicle visits a certain area.

“We are very happy with what we have been able to achieve thanks to Fleetmatics REVEAL,” concludes Mike. “Compared to other GPS tracking systems on the market it is very intuitive and it’s easy to use without any training.”
