Today's News
Wincanton Wins Sainsbury's London Distribution
Wincanton has announced it has secured a three year agreement with Sainsbury's to provide warehousing and distribution services in London.

The agreement will see Wincanton expand their operational footprint with Sainsbury's to now include the Thameside Distribution Centre (DC) in South East London. Wincanton currently manages Sainsbury's distribution centre in Greenford, West London and, with effect from the early part of 2013, will collectively manage the logistics operation for the majority of Sainsbury's Local stores across London.

The announcement builds on Wincanton's long-established relationship with Sainsbury's where they also operate the supermarket chain's DCs in Northampton and Sherburn, as well as being the sole provider of its port to DC container movements in the UK.

Key to Wincanton's success was its stated aim to focus on shared management of the Sainsbury's Local stores across London with a single transport fleet to gain maximum efficiency from its vehicle fleet and warehousing operations. As well as boosting efficiency, Wincanton's plan also demonstrated how the arrangement would minimise Sainsbury's impact on the environment and cut congestion in the capital through improved store delivery schedules.

Eric Born, Chief Executive Officer of Wincanton commented: "We are delighted to be extending our long-term partnership with Sainsbury's and believe this agreement is testament to both the creativity and innovation that our service offering delivers for customers.

"We have a strong pedigree of operating within the UK grocery retail environment and believe our extensive knowledge will continue to offer exciting opportunities for new and potential customers as we evolve our approach to supply chain management to meet the demands of today's challenging market environment."

Chris Marrow, Director of Logistics Operations at Sainsbury's also commented: "Wincanton has a reputation for not only providing excellent customer service, but also for creating innovative and market-leading solutions that enhance and complement their customers' operations.

"As expected, their strategy for our Thameside DC builds on our shared experiences at Greenford, but goes much further by seeking to maximise synergies through a collaborative and innovative transport approach and shared resources across the management and administrative teams."

Cranswick Storage Extension Project Last Stages
KDH are completing the final stages of a large extension project for a pre-packed cooked meats factory which is part of the Cranswick group.

The new facility will provide 10,000 cubic metres of storage space to the site based in Milton Keynes. The works, worth over 165k, include the installation of new insulated panels which will be fitted directly next to the live facility.

KDH staff will undertake works promptly, putting the correct measures in place to ensure the factory can run as normal with no shut down period required.

UK Commercial Manager, Carl Rout, explains why KDH were picked for the job: Following our appointment as the preferred contractor following the tender process, we were able to demonstrate our added value to the client by being proactive throughout the project, ensuring its delivery as per schedule. KDH specialist knowledge and experience have allowed the works to be completed smoothly.

KDH strive to meet individual customer needs and requirements, the project will coincide with the Cranswick environmental initiative. There will be zero landfill on all insulated panel works at no extra cost.

Carl added: We have all broadened our horizons and knowledge, as KDH have trained its staff to recycle and compact waste to remove landfill waste from the cold store build. This attention to detail has allowed KDH to minimise waste and associated costs which has been a benefit to the client and the environment.

Steel Skeleton Completed For New Co-op DC
The giant steel skeleton of The Co-operatives new 22m Composite Distribution Centre in north Derbyshire has been completed.

The structural framework to support the 477,000 sq ft warehouse, which is being built by Derbyshire-based Clowes Developments and First Industrial for The Co-operative Group at Castlewood, has been finished in just four weeks.

The new depot, which is due to open in 2013, will employ around 1,000 people, servicing 513 stores covering Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire.

The site, which is located just off junction 28 of the M1 in South Normanton, will take over the work of two smaller Co-operative food depots in the region - in nearby Alfreton, Derby, and in Bulwell, Nottingham.

There are around 460 people employed at Alfreton and around 280 at Bulwell, and it is anticipated that the majority of the positions at the new site will be filled by existing Co-operative staff transferring, but the new depot is expected to create at least 340 new jobs locally.

Mark Leonard, The Co-operative Groups Head of Logistics Service, said: This is a major milestone in the development of our new food distribution depot at Castlewood. Its impressive to see the structure taking shape and we are well on the way to delivering a state-of-the-art facility, which will not only continue to provide a first-class service to our growing store network, but will also provide a major boost to the local economy and employment.

The development team behind the project is being led by main contractor Winvic Construction and project managers First Industrial Developments, who are working with architects Isherwood McCann, civil engineers Waterman Group, legal advisors Flint Bishop and property consultants FHP.

They are due to complete basebuild construction in September, when a fit-out programme will pave the way for the warehouse to go live in early 2013.

Tim Gilbertson, of agent FHP, added: The Co-operative Groups decision to sign up for Castlewood was a major vote of confidence in the site. Castlewood is about to gain some significant momentum because we firmly believe The Co-operative Group development will be followed in the near future by some significant announcements about other businesses moving into the site.
