Packaging Automation’s Talented Engineer Wins Best Apprentice in Cheshire and Warrington
Packaging Automation (PA) the leading manufacturer and exporter of specialist food packaging machinery received recognition for its long established apprenticeship scheme this week when electrical engineer James Sydenham won Best Apprentice in Cheshire and Warrington in the apprenticeship category at The High Sheriff's Awards for Enterprise.
PA has trained more than 100 apprentices since the scheme started 30 years ago with former apprentices now holding director, management and team leader roles in the business today. As a rapidly growing business, PA needs to continually recruit and has struggled to find engineers who have the specialist skills required for the design and manufacture of food packaging machinery.
The High Sheriff's Awards for Enterprise are Cheshire's most prestigious Awards for business performance. In partnership with the University of Chester, The High Sheriff’s Awards gives Cheshire businesses the opportunity to shine and demonstrate they are an outstanding Cheshire business.
The award was announced at a ceremony held at Chester Racecourse presented by psychologist, high-performance coach and New York Times best-selling author John Amaechi OBE.
Speaking after the event James said “It feels amazing to win, I never thought 4 years ago when I joined that I would be shortlisted for an award like this never mind to win. PA has given me a great opportunity and I can’t thank them enough. The team on the shop floor have given me so much support and I am looking forward to a successful future with PA.
While working, James has completed his HNC in Electrical/Electronic Engineering. James is now continuing to build his knowledge and thriving as an electrical fitter. PA recognises James’ potential to be a future leader in the business and he has been included in our recent Rising Stars development programme.
Neil Ashton PA’s Operations Director said “This award recognises the value that we can offer as a small business to manufacturing and engineering talent creation in the UK. We invest a vast amount of time and effort in developing young individuals that have aspirations to achieve whilst gaining a qualification. Equally as a small employer it is vital that the apprentices can add value to our operation as early on in their training programme as possible. James has demonstrated through his skill, hard work, customer focus and determination that there is no limit to what he can achieve in engineering in the future.”

Anritsu Infivis Ltd’s new Managing Director for the UK, Yoshiyuki Amano, is confident the market for its full range of cutting-edge X-ray, metal detection and checkweigher systems will continue to prosper after Brexit.
Mr Amano has 30 years’ experience with the company and was Anritsu’s Assistant General Manager of International Business Division at its headquarters in Japan, before moving to take charge of Anritsu’s UK operations in Luton – his fourth career assignment overseas.
He said: “It is hard to predict the actual impact of Brexit today, but I believe the UK market will continue to develop as the demands for food safety and product quality assurance keep increasing, especially in an advanced market like here in the UK.”
Designed to help safeguard the integrity of food and pharmaceutical products from contaminants, Anritsu’s world-renowned XR-75 Series of X-ray Inspection Systems, Metal Detectors and SSV Checkweighers are exceptionally versatile and robust, food safety technology that offers the highest quality and performance.
Protecting consumers from contaminants in the food chain, and ensuring the accurate distribution of medical products, is paramount for both the retailer and supplier alike – finding the smallest foreign body in food can be seriously damaging both financially and to a company’s reputation.
“Our X-ray systems have the highest detection levels, are easy to operate and offer very low downtime because they are very easy to clean. All our systems are very reliable, robust and offer very long life usage reducing customer’s Total Cost of Ownership,” added Mr Amano.
X-ray inspection systems supplied by Anritsu are renowned for satisfying every regulatory safety standard around the world. Its Ultra-HD technology can detect down to 0.2mm diameter ferrous, non-ferrous and stainless steel sphere at production line speeds. Anritsu’s ability to detect contaminants with high accuracy, sensitivity and repeatability is unmatched in the industry.
Anritsu designs and develops all its products in-house to support every solution with 100% confidence. Its safety solutions for the food processing and pharmaceutical industries have earned global recognition for their outstanding performance, capability and credibility.
Last word goes to Mr Amano, who said: “Our corporate mission is to contribute to the development of a safe, secure, and prosperous society by offering high level Product Quality Assurance solutions.”
