Foodie Shops Reclaim The High Street
New independent businesses in the UK are capitalising on the nation’s growing ‘foodie’ population, according to Simply Business.

The business insurance broker analysed over 40,000 independent retail outlets across the UK and discovered an increase of 27% in independent food merchants year-on-year across the nation.

This rise of independent food and drink retailers may demonstrate a consumer backlash against national supermarket stalwarts and an increased desire to buy local produce.

Small businesses are stepping in to satisfy consumer appetite, as Britons increasingly prefer to shop local and veer away from out of town supermarkets.

Simply Business revealed growth amongst an array of independent food and beverage stores, ranging from a 31% rise in bakeries across the UK to a 10% increase in wine merchants:

The study also identified an average increase of 18% in Britain’s independent shops overall year-on-year, supporting recent research which revealed that the number of empty shops on the UK high street fell to their lowest level in three-and-a-half years in December 2013.

Jason Stockwood, CEO of Simply Business said: “The surge in independent food merchants exemplifies the nimble nature of small businesses as their success is often determined by smartly tapping into growing trends at the right time.

“We hope these independent food and drink stores will profit from consumers turning their backs on established supermarket chains in favour of their local providers who breath new life into community high streets.

“Independent businesses are vital to the ongoing growth of the UK economy and our findings reinforce this.”

Organic Growth For First Time In Four Years

The Soil Association's annual Organic Market Report today reveals that the organic sector has seen growth of 2.8% in 2013: the first time the organic market has seen annual growth since 2008.

Organic sales are growing slightly ahead of the overall grocery sales for 2013, which finished the year at around +2.1% [1].. The 2014 Organic Market Report, published today (13 March), shows that the organic market is now worth £1.79billion. Those brands that carry the Soil Association logo have had an even stronger 2013, with growth of more than 5%.

And it seems this trend is set to continue in 2014, with organic sales for the first four weeks of the year seeing growth of +2.5% - way outperforming overall grocery sales, which were down -3.2% [2].

Independent retailers have led the way with growth of almost 7% (6.9%) to almost £10million per week, indicating that more consumers are choosing to shop in smaller stores where they know they will find a wider choice of organic products. Online sales of organic continue to grow strongly with Ocado seeing an increase in sales of 10.4%. Supermarkets have seen some growth in the past year, with overall sales up 1.2%. However, Sainsbury's - the country's biggest organic retailer with 29% market share - saw a 7% increase in sales of its own-label organic products, closely followed by Waitrose who saw its organic sales increase by 6.5% - indicating other supermarkets are yet to capitalise on increasing consumer demand for organic.

Household names, such as Yeo Valley Organic, Green & Blacks and Rachel's Organic are the most popular organic brands in supermarkets [2]. Also seeing growth throughout 2013 are mail-order, home-delivery and veg box schemes - up 11% on last year, with leading brands Abel & Cole and Riverford seeing a combined increase in sales of 17.9%.

The organic food market appears to be recovering across many different sectors, with meat, fish and poultry (+2.2%), vegetables (+3.4%) and dairy (+4.4%) all seeing positive growth throughout the year [2]. This positive outlook is also reflected in consumer attitudes to organic and bodes well for the next 12 months, with 45% of organic consumers intending to buy more organic fruit and veg in the year ahead and 22% intending to buy more organic dairy in 2014 [3].

Organic baby food continues to be a popular choice, with more than 50% of spending on baby food being organic.

Four out of five households now buy organic produce, with shoppers under 34 stating they are willing to spend the most on organic products [3]. The main reasons for choosing organic were it contains fewer chemicals and pesticides (37%), it's natural and unprocessed (34%) and it's healthier for me and my family (33%) [4] - indicating a slight change in priorities for consumers from 2013, where it's healthier for me and my family was the main reason for consumers choosing organic [5].

Speaking about the report, Rob Sexton, CEO of Soil Association Certification said; "To see the organic market showing such strong signs of growth, particularly when grocery sales as a whole are slowing, shows just how much potential there is in the organic sector. Both the growth in the organic market and the accelerating growth of products carrying the Soil Association logo further highlight the growing public demand for organic and food logos that they can trust. The message to supermarkets and other retailers and organic businesses is clear: if you make organic goods available and promote them well, consumers will respond by continuing to purchase the products they have confidence in.

"In addition research has shown that organic shoppers expect to buy more organic products this year than last so we have reason to be positive about the outlook for organic in 2014 and beyond. Now, the priority needs to be ensuring a greater choice of organic produce on shelves."

Despite the continued demand from UK consumers, figures from Defra report that producer and livestock numbers and the UK's organic land area decreased in the year to December 2012. The numbers of organic producers and processors also fell by 6.3% to 6,487. Currently around 3.5% (606,000 hectares) of the agricultural land area in the UK is organic.

Rob Sexton continued, "2013 has seen a decline in the amount of agricultural land in the UK that is organic and we know that many farmers are concerned about the profitability of organic. We have strong evidence to show that organic farming systems are at least as profitable as non-organic and we know that demand for organic is increasing amongst consumers. A serious injection of producer confidence is needed, in the shape of increased commitment from retailers and policy makers to help support existing organic farmers and grow the market in future, ensuring organic supply can meet increasing consumer demand."

Birds Eye Suggest More Meal Planning As Report Shows Food Waste Underestimated
91% of families say they throw away unused food
These families estimate they waste nearly 300 each year, less than half the actual figure
Vegetables top the list of the most commonly wasted food group
40% feel guilty when they waste food

Birds Eye the nations experts in family teatimes since 1938, has released new research into the issue of food waste.

The nationwide study reveals that the average household spends 68 a week on food and that a massive 91% of households with children admit to throwing some of that food away. Interestingly however, it would seem that the value of wasted food is heavily underestimated.

On average these families estimate they waste over 270 a year (5.20 a week) on food discarded without using. Yet, according to a robust research by WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme) the actual amount of edible household food waste is worth around 12bn, or around 680 a year (13 a week) for the average family with children.

Food waste is a huge problem for the nation and one that is making us unhappy 62% of those that waste fresh food and drink said they felt annoyed when they wasted food and 40% said it made them feel guilty. Whilst the nation feels the guilt when it comes to food waste, the research confirms the fact that a lot of Brits (nearly 70%) have changed their eating habits as a result of the economic downturn 47% of families are eating out less, 24% have changed what they eat at mealtimes, for example by buying cheaper food, and 26% try to all eat the same food at mealtimes to keep costs down.

Whilst budget is a key consideration for families choosing food to eat each evening (66%), the results suggest that waste is still one area that can be addressed when it comes to reducing the amount spent on food. Vegetables account for a large proportion of the food that is being thrown away, with 50% of households with children regularly binning their uneaten or unused greens, closely followed by fruit (45%) and bread (42%).

The research champions frozen food when it comes to saving in terms of wastage (56%) and money (29%). However, interestingly the research reveals an information gap when it comes to freezing fresh food, with many not realising that some foods can be frozen, like milk (50%), fish (15%) and herbs (70%) without losing their quality or flavour. In addition, only 1 in 3 households regularly buy frozen vegetables or freeze vegetables at home, despite it being the food group that is wasted most.

According to the findings, the main reason for people wasting food is largely down to people buying more food than they need (37%), with 22% doing so because of supermarket offers including Buy One get One Free deals or similar. Lack of meal planning prior to shopping is another issue, with one in three people admitting to not planning and 15% of people attributing food wastage to this. Families with children at home are proving more savvy however, with 37% saying they plan more now than before the downturn in an effort to save money and avoid food waste.

The news comes as a new report by the Fabian Society and Birds Eye, which looks at consumer attitudes to food waste, is discussed in parliament. Amongst the report recommendations is a call from consumers for more advice on better mealtime planning. Birds Eye is encouraging the nation to make the most of their food and save money. The frozen food expert takes the best natural products and fast-freezes them at the peak of perfection, delivering fresh and tasty teatime meals without the waste.

Helen Martin, General Marketing Manager at Birds Eye, said: We all know were facing difficult economic times at the moment, yet the results of this research show that wastage is still highly prevalent amongst families in the UK. Its especially interesting to learn that we dont know were wasting as much as we are.
