Magnetic Separators Done To A T For Twinings

Eclipse Magnetics recently won an order to supply four high intensity double row housed grid magnets for Twinings, the world, renowned traditional, aromatic and flavoured tea manufacturer in Andover.

As part of an ongoing initiative to monitor product quality it was agreed that some existing plant may require replacing or upgrading, with the existing magnetic separators being highlighted in the audit.

As the UK’s premier supply and authority on magnetics to the food industry, Eclipse carried out an early inspection to confirm that the existing equipment did actually require replacing to ensure consistent product quality.

Eclipse had to design the new systems to fit into the space, which would be left from the previous units. The magnetic systems benefited from grid support roller tracks, which aid in the cleaning operation.

One of Twinings Engineers commented “With such a critical piece of machinery we had to make the replacement a priory. We were aware that Eclipse already supplied our North Shields plant so was totally confident in their ability to supply the magnets against the requested tight deadline”.

The development and advances made over the last few years in magnetic separator design and their application has massively increased their use. More and more manufacturers are not only incorporating this technology into their own processing plants they are insisting that their suppliers also use it to meet their own audit standards.

Magnetic separators will remove both ferrous and stainless steel wear, which becomes paramagnetic and thus is able to be removed from the process line.

“Eighty per cent of all foreign metal objects found in food after a product recall were magnetic!!”

Magnets are very robust, need very little maintenance and have no running costs, capable of removing micron sized pieces of contamination there is currently no alternative technology to replace the function of a magnet, more over there is no product loss as the magnet only removes the contamination.
