I would recommend this course to anyone who handles food – whether working in food manufacturing, or catering on a small or large scale
Nationally acclaimed food safety and nutrition training consultancy, Verner Wheelock Associates (VWA), used Food Safety Week as a backdrop for the launch of its new online Level 3 Food Safety course.
A group including delegates from Dairy Crest, Newby Foods, New Ivory, The Authentic Food Company, and D&K Wheelwright butchers attending one of VWA’s classroom based Level 3 Food Safety training courses were invited to a barbecue lunch for Food Safety Week. The barbecue aimed to promote the importance of good food hygiene and how this can help avoid the high incidence of food poisoning that is often synonymous with cooking and eating outdoors. With many of the delegates working with high risk foods such as dairy and meat products the message of the day was highly relevant.
Founder and managing director of VWA, Dr Verner Wheelock, a leading food and nutrition expert, was in charge of the cooking and told his guests that the barbecue was aimed at highlighting this year’s theme for Food Safety Week – the prevention of Campylobacter through thorough cooking and avoiding cross-contamination, in line with Food Standards Agency advice to the public.
With 55,000 reported cases of food poisoning from Campylobacter in the UK in 2008 the realistic number of cases including those unreported is likely to be close to 375,000 each year.
“The public should be more aware of the chance of suffering food poisoning but there are some common sense steps they can take to avoid getting ill. Just storing, handling and cooking food properly will minimise the risk,” said Dr Wheelock.
"VWA’s Level 2 Food Safety course is already available online and takes approximately three hours to complete. I would recommend this course to anyone who handles food – whether working in food manufacturing, or catering on a small or large scale – even cooking at barbecues for friends and family.
"And now, as part of our continuing development, we are pleased to announce the launch of our new Level 3 Food Safety course which is aimed at those who work in a supervisory role in the food industry (manufacturing, retail, catering or hospitality). Based on our classroom based course, the online version offers flexibility and convenience to those who wish to study food safety in more detail.”
